10 Terrifying Airport Runways

Nestled in a valley below the Himalayan Mountains, Bhutan's Paro Airport is notoriously frightening to fly into. In addition to navigating the area's 16,000-foot-high jagged peaks, pilots also must contend with forceful winds that gust around the mountains. But if you find yourself on a flight to Paro, rest assured that you're in good hands: Only eight pilots in the world are qualified to make the landing.

It's no longer open, but Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong just might take the cake for the most hair-raising airport ever. It was located in the center of Kowloon, Hong Kong, and pilots were forced to make a sharp turn and fly between buildings to strategically place their jets on the runway—which ended with a drop into the ocean. Much to adrenaline junkies' dismay, runway misses and safety reviews caused the airport to close in 1998.

There's eight more :hatsoff:

I saw this on the Travel Channel. There was one in the Carribean & in South America (don't remember the countries due to no coffee) where at both airports its a steep descent. If your landing is off you end up in the ocean at the Carribean airport. The other was a 65ft drop onto a highway. And I thought coming into National Airport in D.C. was bad.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
once landed on Sicily. Did not like looking out the window and seeing the water getting closer and closer and closer.

Logan Airport in Boston. It's all over water and then suddenly you're on the runway. I also find it to be a rather bumpy ride on the approach, too. But in the interests of full disclosure, I HATE flying, so all airports and runways scare the shit out of me.:eek::eek:

I always thought that Detroit metro was pretty scarry. After a long flight you approach the straight shot runway and if you survive the easy landing, your chances of being shot 10 minutes after leaving the airport are like 1 in 100. Only 1 plane has crashed here though so thats a good thing I guess.

Newark airport, that place sucks I remember flying out of there once and having to get in one of those Richie Valens/Buddy Holly planes to get to my destination, no thank you!

I flew into Kai Tak once in summer of 1982. I was seated on the right side and that final turn on finals is a ride. I remember how close the buildings appeared to be.
