RALEIGH, N.C. – At least one sheriff's deputy in North Carolina won't have any trouble catching speeders. Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that the Wake County Sheriff's Department has a Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Chevrolet said the car has a top track speed of 198 mph, with a base sticker price of $74,875. Its V8 racing engine generates 505 horsepower.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Phyllis Stevens said the car didn't cost the county any money since it was seized from a drug dealer.

I see a lawsuit in their future.

If I go purchase a firearm, occasionally take it to the range and use it for home protection that's one thing because I assume the risk of ownership. If you issue one to an individual who possesses it in an official capacity then that person ought to be required to obtain specific training and certification.

No different IMO with this. I wouldn't hand over the keys to a machine like this for an official duty like police find themselves without them having taken specialized driving classes for that type of car.

With respect to costs.....wait until it's time to change out the tires and it's realized they must also change the wheels because you can't simply change the tires with run-flats.

With the type of driving that is likely to be done with this vehicle, the maintenance and repair costs will probably be 4 times as much as the old Crown Vic...

How does that work in America, I mean who decides what cars a department or precinct gets? Because a while back I saw a county sheriff with a dodge ram duallie and thought surely that's not standard issue?

The states, individual departments, town & city councils make those decisions here. A lot of state police agencies use Dodge Chargers now. And the Mustang used to be pretty popular as a pursuit vehicle. A pony car or a muscle car I can buy. But this...

This is going to sound really weird coming from me, because I absolutely love (love, LOVE!) hot, fast cars. But this is a waste of money. This is nothing more than showboating at the expense of the taxpayer, IMO. What's the purpose, to catch up to all the Porsche 997's and Ferrari F430's that race through Raleigh on a daily (weekly? monthly?) basis???

I was also wondering if the cops that drive them get the option to buy them after they've served their term?

Doubtful but why would you want to? A performance car which has gone through the rigors of police duty probably wouldn't be worth much but large repair and replacement costs...even though maintained on a proper schedule.

I'd say different areas have different rules. But where I used to live, the Sheriff's office bought a small fleet of Harley motorcycles and two Mustang GT's. At the end of their duty lives, they'd strip the lights and equipment off and sell the vehicles at public auction.

I thought in most cases like this members of an organization which stands to benefit from such auctions are prohibited from participating in them. Wouldn't that be a prima facie conflict of interest as those members could simply drive up bids.

At least in my area, neither the cops nor other county employees can buy the retired vehicle, unless it is a "no bid" at auction.

I know of one deputy who used a strawman to buy a retired Harley. But he was dismissed shortly after that - I believe for reasons other than buying the bike... but I'm sure that didn't help his cause.
