Besides taking up an astonishing amount of bandwidth across the entire internet, porn doesn't really have any more influence than they had before. In fact it might be even less now. Porn didn't really have anything to do with the whole Blu Ray/HD DVD debate like people thought it might, and it doesn't really drive any new things anymore. Back in the VHS days it might have mattered. Today, it's about tapped out.
I also thought a lot of those numbers where kind of skewed. Like with the movies. They only took what the mainstream made in one segment and compared it to what porn makes in everything. I also think that getting a totally reliable info on money coming into porn is not that easy. It's by no means beyond some of the people in it to exaggerate what they bring in or how well they do, even the bigger companies (like Digital Playground) and they often do. Unlike with Mainstream stuff any chimp with a camera can make also make porn and claim to bring in money with it also.
The biggest thing that can be said for it is that sex can often sell no matter the industry it sells things for. That can be porn or regular products that are commercialized on television. Sex is one of the things that runs the world not an industry that uses it.
On an unrelated note is it sad that I actually live not that far away from where they put Dipshit Michigan? :1orglaugh
