Advanced Search concern

In the advanced search feature, there is a checkbox that says "Also search in child forums". I am concerned about this for obvious reasons. Can someone explain to me what the function of this checkbox is?

A child forum is a sub-forum. Like post games is a child/sub-forum of the games and stuff section.
