Norm Coleman concedes election.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Republican Norm Coleman conceded to Democrat Al Franken in Minnesota's contested Senate race on Tuesday, ending a nearly eight-month recount and court fight over an election decided by only a few hundred votes.

Coleman announced his decision at a news conference in St. Paul, hours after a unanimous Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that Franken, a former "Saturday Night Live" comedian and liberal commentator, should be certified the winner.

"The Supreme Court has made its decision and I will abide by the results," Coleman told reporters outside his St. Paul home.

"In these tough times we all need to focus on the future, and the future is that we have a new United States senator," Coleman said.

Franken's presence in the Senate would give the Democrats control of 60 seats, enough to overcome any Republican filibuster if they stay united.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the earliest Franken would be seated is next week, because the Senate is out of session for the July 4 holiday.

My only experience with Al Franken is his book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them", but it was well-written and thorough, so I'd expect the same level of commitment and knowing-his-shit in any field he applies himself to, really.

Yeah, now whenever something is fucked up we can lay the blame squarely on democrats' shoulders. The thing about Al Franken (and I think he used to be funny as hell, by the way) is that like Obama and Janine Garafolo, he's just not that great unless he's got a teleprompter or a script in front of him.

Minnesota's got a pretty sketchy history of entertainers elected to public office. Nobody I know from Minnesota thinks fondly of Jesse Ventura's administration although it started out with a lot of promise. I guess the same could be said of California now, as well. At least Franken, Ventura and the governator have the balls to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to political beliefs.

I get tired of supposed celebrities (and to a slightly lesser extent, politicians) from either side pontificating about what's best for this country.
