No matter what is said in these posts laws need to be changed so that a retired military veteran can collect BOTH there military retired pay from DEFAS (Defense Accounting and Finance) and if awarded a disablity pension from the VA together without offset no matter how they are retired from the service. Veterans that collect 100% disablity from the VA are allowed to collect social security so why is it that a disablity retired veteran that served less than 20 years of service not be allowed to collect a disablity pension from the VA and retirement from the Military ? If you dont want to help veterans then please ignore this post. If you do then I would like to hear sugestions ? Senators Mcain and Feingold said this is double dipping I say B.S.

Question:

Why should a veteran, just because they are a veteran and for no other reason, be entitled to anything more than every other United States citizen who works for a living?

If the Celebrity In Chief wants to give American vets the finger, he should formally (in writing) forfeit any right to any protection from them. This means:

no military protection while overseas or stateside

privatization of Air Force One and all its support staff (tax dodgers will apply in droves)

no more salutes from loyal military personnel

no protection from the inevitable lynch mobs when the American public finally gets fed up with his ridiculous crap

I can agree with that. Only it's odd because you seem to paint it as a bad thing, but that would earn my respect- a president that denies special treatment and really abides on the same level as the citizens? sounds like just the guy we need to me.

Because when I'm working I don't worry about leaving my internals decorating the rose bushes and garden fence; I also go home or to the store, or to anyplace I want ...even quiting on the spot and moving to Arizona if I want.
Military give their life, soul and ass to the care of Uncle Sam, go and do what they're told and agree to do this as long as they are needed, with reserve duty possible years after the TOD. In return, Uncle provides a minimum of pay, all basic neccessities, and after-care including new plastic body parts to replace the ones lost ...or the sore back hurt lifting paper stacks at a base somewhere providing support for the war machine that is the US military.
There is a difference, and that's the agreement in place and has been for a while.
War may or may not be in any military persons future, but as long as they are totally in the control of Uncle Sam they are military.
Not the same as a truck driver in Spokane driving to Houston...

Not every single person who joins the Armed Forces has to worry about that. That's my point. Not to discount anything that they are doing, but some people who are members of the US Armed Forces never see a foreign country or even a battlefield. Why should those people earn more of the tax-payers' dollars? The mentality that ALL veterans, just because they are a veteran, deserve some sort of special financial assistance with their medical bills is ridiculous.

It like giving a brand new secretary the same exact benefits as the CEO, who has been running the company for 30 years. What has the secretary done to deserve all of the benefits as the CEO? Nothing.

That is exactly how it would work if every single veteran, just because they served in the Armed Forces (not even considering battle time or danger) was given the same exact benefits and special financial assistance.

As it stands right now, not every single Vet gets benefits. Upon seperation from service. All Service Members go through a literal head to foot physical/medical exam. IF anything if found during those exams, the Service Member is then sent to a doctor to further examine anything that may be wrong. Most Service Members do not get past this final examination. Because once this final exam is done it is then sent to the VA with the doctors recommendation as to whether this will be a chronic problem for the Service Member as time progresses. The VA doctors then make a final decision based on any prognosis if benefits are to be awarded.

Most Service Members that transition to Civilian life do not recieve benefits, regardless if an injury was sustained while on active duty.

Just because Corporal Joe Schmuckatelly got a paper cut on his pinky one time while filing paperwork doesn't automatically qualify him for benefits.

Even Retirees go through the Seps Phys/Med Screening. Most of them do not recieve Medical benefits either.

So... it's not an automatic thing like your thinking it is.

I think you're missing my point. Allow me to produce a hypothetical scenario to illustrate what I'm trying to say...

Joe Schmuckatelly joins the Army. He goes through boot camp and becomes a soldier. After being a member of the United States Army for 3 months, he is sent to Iraq. His duty is that of a cook. He is in Iraq for a year and ends up severely injuring his back while trying to lift a crate of produce. It is considered an "on duty injury" by the US government and the proper paperwork is filed. His injuries will effect him for the rest of his life and it is deemed that he should receive medical benefits that will assist him with his medical bills for the rest of his life.

AKA - Our tax dollars are helping pay his medical bills.

Sgt. Kickass joins the Army. He goes through boot camp and becomes a soldier. After being a member of the United States Army for 3 months, he is sent to Iraq. He is in Iraq for 10 years and engages in battle on a weekly basis. He is shot at constantly and avoids death on a regular basis. He earns a Medal of Honor and plenty of recognition for his heroic accomplishments in Iraq. He is a true American hero. After returning home from Iraq, he is shipped off to Afghanistan. He spends 5 years in Afghanistan and engages in battle on a weekly basis. In Afghanistan, he ends up getting shot in the knee, shattering his knee cap into a million pieces. His leg can't be saved and it has to be amputated.

Joe Schmuckatelly is a cook that spent a year overseas and never saw battle.

Sgt. Kickass is an American hero who truly risked his life, each and every day for 15 years, who was constantly in battle.

Technically, both suffered "on duty" injuries that resulted from their Army responsibilities. One is a hero who lost his leg at war, while the other is a cook who hurt himself picking up a crate. Yet, our tax dollars are being used to help pay both of their medical bills.

How is that right?

In this scenario, I agree that Sgt. Kickass' medical bills should be paid for, because he earned it. He spent numerous years in the Army, engaging in constant battle and truly risking his life for our freedoms. But, Joe Schmuckatelly spent only a year overseas and didn't do anything except hurt his back while innocently picking up a crate, so why in the hell should our tax dollars be paying for that?

I see what your saying, now...okay.

Under the current system, Sgt Kickass would be medically (Honorably) discharged and recieve 100% disability benefits for the rest of his life.

After his contract (<-- is important) is up, Schmuckatelly would be evaluated for VA benefits, if awarded he could potentially receive a 2% - 5% medical benefit for one year. After the year he will be re-evaluated and under re-evaluation again, the VA would decide if benefits are to be rewarded.

***Normally if a back injury is incurred while lifting an object, he will get "Grunt Cany" (motrin) and be put on "Light Duty" for a few days, No Benefits/Medical would be granted upon completion of contract. This is the standard practice.

Here is one that a lot of Veterans and Military retirees don’t know about a little known law known as 38 USC 5305 - Sec. 5305. Waiver of retired pay. Says that some disability retirees such as myself are not allowed to collect there military retirement pay and VA disability pay at the same time.

Since I was disability retired from the military with less than 20 years service I cannot collect a disability pension and military retirement at the same time I have to forfeit dollar for dollar my pension funny that a VA disabled veteran that is rated at 100% by the VA can collect his or her VA disability AND at the same time apply for and collect Social Security Disability too so why the double standard congress ?

thanking veterans and helping them to have another activity in every day life after they did their duty for the country is important.

The more chance of harm, the less pay you will get and the more likely you will be screwed, versus administrators and appointees who didn't have to remotely earn their jobs in the same way. Military personnel are majorily fucked, and it's only getting worse as the federal government is subsidizing more and more salaries at financial companies.

Same with the state, where police officers, firemen and teachers (if you consider how many have their careers massacred by administrators overnight) get paid far less than administrators and other appointees who didn't have to remotely earn their jobs in the same way.
