Trans fats, smokers, soda/ pop.

They will go after alcohol next.

Repeal the trans fat and smoking laws/ bans and stop them from making new oppressive and unconstitutional laws. They only have so much power and telling you what you can and can't put into your body isn't one of them.

They aren't telling you what you can and can't put in your body. They're just making you pay more for it.

Lots of government programs operate effectively. Some operate ineffectively (like Education) but that doesn't mean they no longer have use for society and need to be tossed aside. They need to be fixed. They need to be fixed FREE FROM LOBBYIST INPUT!

Government is what unites Americans. Granted, when government fails or becomes corrupt, there is nothing which irritates people more.

I would not want to live in a nation of racist, classist "unabomber militia" types which is basically the vision that the GOP offers today...

I have no problem whatsoever with taxing "soft drinks" or sodas, etc. Obesity is the most pressing drain on the healthcare system. We have to do something about it because obesity is ruining our country--we're eating garbage, we're using up excess resources as we cloth, bathe and feed our ever-increasingly fat bodies.

This is one area we can't expect help/guidance from the corporations. They don't give a fuck. They just want to empty your pockets.

We must make our own decisions about our health and happiness and standard of living.

Way to misstate and repeat the usual misinformed dogma...Kazinsky da Unabomber was an extreme left winger who had Big Al's writings in his cabin, with many key points highlighted...among lots of anti govt and eco-fanatic literature.
He's one of you, Senor Leftie...:D

Sure, you were excited when those evil smokers got theirs, and the government's jackbooted thugs rolled in to tax and ban them from existence. You cheered, you laughed, you thought "serves those dirty bastards right!" But now, I'm afraid, they've come for you, drinker of sugary soft drinks...

You have a choice- you can start voting these oppressive, money-hungry sons of bitches (regardless of party) out of office starting in 2010. Or, you can continue to give them your money, willingly or not, for whatever cause they want to burn it for.

Pick out ONE thing the federal government has fixed to the point where you've said "Man, they sure do a good job at that!" Or one federal program that is run with such efficiency, your faith in them is strong.

Social Security is said to have been broken for a long time- it's been an election issue for almost a decade. Guess what... not fixed.

And this is who some people want running medical care for everyone.

Astounding. Ominous. Because after they have jacked the price of a 20 ounce soda in the US to $3 or $4 each, they'll find whatever it is you love, and they'll tax the shit out of that, too. Porn? The internet? Fast food? Meat? Your own vegetable gardens? Remember a few years ago when they wanted to make multi-vitamins controlled substances?

It absolutely will not stop with these folks until we fire each and every one of them over the next couple election cycles. We need term limits, and REAL bans on lobbyists. And a federal government about 1/3 the size it is now.

Sick of this shit

Trans fats are not allowed any more and they are trying to tax some things out of existence. So, they are telling you what to do.

And that is the problem. We do not need the government to tell us what we do/don't need.

Well, "the government" told us that we had to invade a sovereign country - Iraq - because they possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction (cue sinister theme music) - and of course, just like the USA, planned to use them. "The government" told us we were in danger, and then put us in Iraq, where we've lost more soldiers than the number of people who were actually killed in the terrorist attack that happened during the presidential administration which is actually trying to take credit for "keeping us safe".

But, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. I shouldn't make presumptions here. What did you think, tiger1977, when The Government told us that we needed to go to war to stop terrorism and evil-doers? (...and remember, there's no magical pot of gold to fund our warmaking - taxes pay for that!)

I'm glad the U.S. govt. (and many others) decided that we don't need CFCs (like in old air conditioners and hairspray and such, if my memory serves...), as those chemicals were destroying the ozone layer. Guess what? After they were banned (Dammit, I WANTED an A/C unit with CFCs!! I was robbed of my choice!), the hole in the ozone layer has shrunk dramatically.

Trans fats are not allowed any more and they are trying to tax some things out of existence. So, they are telling you what to do.

The government tells me, and everyone else, that I must drive very slowly through school zones, and that applies even if you don't have a kid of your own! The government tells me that I can't dump my used motor oil into the nearest lake or river. I don't really think much about these requirements, but I know there are plenty of dolts out there (and more will be coming, seeing as the conservatives are pushing the "education is elitist" crap on the populace now) who don't, so I'm kinda glad that such laws exist...

:2 cents:

Iraq is actually paying for a large part of the 'war'. They are suppose to be paying for a lot more than they currently are though.
As for us needing to go to Iraq and Afganistan, well last time I checked I have not seen any planes flying into buildings.
As for the hole in the ozone layer there has been gobbs of historic evidence located in Antarctica that it is a naturally occuring event.
We would not need laws regarding where people should dump thier toxic waste if everyone was actually getting an education that focused on Math, Language, Science, and History instead of Socialism, Art, Music and basketweaving. As long as the Nancy Pelosi's and Jimmi Carters of the country want our children to grow up dependent on the government I don't see the education system changing anytime soon.

Is socialism the reason why you don't seem to know the difference between plural and possessive, or why you can't spell the name of a man who was president in the late 20th C.? Did the Texas socialists force you to weave baskets rather than taking English and history classes?

Its reach was more insidious than I ever suspected!

You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
To be honest I didn't notice that there was a prohibition on smokes. There is a ban on smoking in bars but that is hardly the same thing. It has proved to be a popular decision.

Not in my area. Businesses are leaving because their customers are leaving.

The people who voted for the smoking ban are to blame and they said they would go to places that were smoke-free. A lot of hypocritical liars. For voting to take away someone else's rights and destroying someone's business I hope they lose their jobs and have to move away.

That's the least they deserve.

The war was for the safety of our country. I was referring to the gov't instilling it's thoughts/practices on individuals. As for driving slowly through school zones and dumping motor oil in a lake or stream...that's just common sense. I do believe in gov't, just not a large, over-reaching federal gov't. Leave the states to govern things that they feel would be in their best interest. I just feel the fed gov't tries to be a part of many things it has no business messing with, democrat or republican.

Which war are you talking about?:dunno: Bush/Cheney marched us into 3 wars basically simultaneously. If we go by capturing/killing Osama and if we consider the moral ramifications of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo, then we're not any safer than we were before the wars. We're just a lot poorer. We haven't addressed securing ports and securing our borders at all. All we've done is make domestic plane travel a massively expensive and inefficient form of travel. :dunno:

After having witnessed the GOP in action in 2008, and with the candidates they offered up, and with Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin, I really think we have too many dumb people in our country to be left alone to use "common sense." People in the Red States seem to equate "individual rights" and "freedom" with the right to be cluess and selfish ("if I want to pour motor oil in the stream, by god, by the power of the Constitution, I damn well will!")

We need more gov't, not less. We just need to make it more efficient.

We need more gov't, not less. We just need to make it more efficient.

We will have to agree to disagree on the amount of gov't. I think that states should be able run themselves with limited federal gov't intervention.

I agree with you that the GOP was extremely weak this past election. I voted for McCain b/c in my mind he was the lesser of the 2 evils that were on the ballot. Hopefully conservatives can get their ass in gear and be ready for elections in 2010 & 2012.

As for "common sense" that some folks think we lack, that's all the more reason for the gov't to not get involved in individual lives. People doing stupid/retarded shit that will affect others, then the others will take care of that person. And if someone chooses to do something harmful to themselves, well, we've all seen how that usually turns out. "Hey ya'll, watch this" usually precedes their demise.
