I did work as a lay jdge in court here in Germany.
Wasn't drafted, but went ahead and offered to do it. I felt it is my duty as a citizen profitting from the country's services to give back.
The cases were interesting, too.
One was a middle-aged small drug pusher, who was cought the fourth time on several small offenses. That time we decided he had to do jail time.
Another was a mental guy who was dangerous when he got into his dark moods. We had a psychiatrist who gave us his opinion about if the guy was a case for a mental institute or prison.
We decided he has do be in the institute, but a closed one.
My advice:
If you are thankful that your country offers a police force, fire-fighters, etc., you should do jury duty
