Anyone wanting to do a sci-fi series nowdays should take a look at Stargate SG1.
Kill off all the sub plots in a major battle scene they can't end. Then reach Earth to find out what a mess it's in so go to live on Mars instead.
I don't think the subplots are that distracting from the show. I guess if you consider the main plot of the show the search for Earth, how could they really stick with that plot. All of the subplots are just how they deal with the drama of various situations before reaching getting there.
I think SG-1 kind of went out in left field when they started with the space ships and all that. But SG-1 has never really followed a serial format. You can almost pick up at any point through the first few seasons and have a decent idea of what's going on. It wasn't until later that you had to have watched previous episodes to really be able to follow it.
What are the too many plots in BSG?
