The reputation a lot of Mac fans have of being smug and holier than thou certainly won't be helped by the news from the US that Apple is apparently refusing to repair computers that show signs of cigarette smoke.

The proof is in the design, my friend. As long as the Wintel world keeps getting passed and laughed at by Apple's design team...stories like this one won't matter and people will continue to flock to Apple products. Nobody aspires to own anything Wintel. It's all taken for granted. People aspire to own Apple products.

Most Apple owners I know go to an independent Apple store for repairs anyway...

People don't care. Apple offers a seamless experience--iTunes, iPhoto, Safari...everything Apple touches is consumer gold. AppleTV may have been a bust, but the concept was solid and when most people's homes connect to the internet through fiberoptic speed (100MB/sec or faster) than AppleTV will make more sense and we'll see it again....

oh, and my computer is neither stained nor a shitbox. i built it myself, using a black aluminium lian-li case, pabst fans (nearly silent), and it runs pretty much any software ever created, inclusing Apple OSX, which i've never bothered to install (or even download) because, well, there isn't any software for it.

and btw: Apple uses the very same intel chips that most PCs use (since IBM refused to make stuff for them any longer). but PC makers don't refuse to honour warranties because their customer happens to be a smoker.

The chip switch was made because IBM's chips were always too slow compared to intel. Apple used to get hammered for being too slow. Now that they switched--well, nobody cares about speed anymore :dunno:

IBM makes the CPUs in all current consoles (the PS3 chip as a joint venture with sony and toshiba, the other two by itself), and the xbox 360 CPU ran at 3.2GHz when it was launched... and that uses a powerPC core just like apple used, and just like the other consoles use.

apple was dumped by IBM, not the other way around. no sense making custom parts for a 2% market share when you could be making parts for 3 successful machines instead.

Seamless as long as you stick to proprietary hardware and software, anything else you're on your own. Ask anyone who runs XP or later, you can plug just about anything into your machine and Windows will have a base driver to use it.
