Actually, rep is a compliment, neg rep is a non-compliment...and what with freedom of expression being what it is, I love to express my approval and disapproval freely.
Rep is absolutely a useless number, except to show how often someone likes you...or not.

I rep for quality of post or thread irrespective of whether I agree with it or not.
I think I may have neg rep someone who neg rep me for responding with the same thing they neg rep me for. But I largely choose not to neg rep. Stupid posts speak for themselves IMO.

I hand out rep only for a post or thread that I feel is truly outstanding from some vantage point. I never neg rep anyone....just not my style. Besides, normally someone who starts accumulating neg rep ends up being banned and it is fun to watch the process play out. :1orglaugh

I rep when something makes me really laugh hard, or I think the post is in line with my beliefs, or opinions. I have neg repped, but not very often, I would rather tell someone they're a fucktard, and leave it at that. My problem is, I try to rep someone, and it says I can't because I already gave them some, but I can't spread it around, because I don't genuinely feel there are any posts at that time that deserve rep, and by the time I can rep the person I wanted to in the first place, I forget I wanted to.

well there are those who think rep is so damn important that they spend every waking minute in the "i'd rep the member above me... " thread to get more points and then pretend they don't care about rep... you all know who that is

I would love a peak at OCSM rep points. They join the board and within the space of 100 posts have the rep of someone whose been here for 5 years. Half could post something as random as "I like cheese" and probably recieve enough rep to put to shame a years worth of genuine posting. Good god its not like repping every single bloody post is gonna get you a "one free fuck" pass the next time she is in 100 miles of you!
As for repping other members, if i like what theyve posted, it merits the appropriate rep, adversely for things I dont like. I do always chuckle though when I leave neg rep, I get a PM the next day from the offending member whining about how i ruined their perfect rep or whatever opinion theyve chosen to share with me in as many eloquent words as "your a poo poo head".

i take those as compliments. they make me laugh because they make me imagine a certain person's head is about to explode because he attaches such importance to these points since they're probably the only thing that keep him from committing suicide.

I, personally, am a huge rep whore. I'm a shameless slut (but that's another story).
I was repping for good links (yes, there is a section here that has links to naked girls doing things), funny comments, and the like. I go to the "Rep the member above me thread" to get more, because, when I +rep someone, I just want to +rep the hell out of them to encourage the kind of behavoiur that I approve.

that always pisses me off. I always PM anyone who negative reps me and give them shit for it, not because I think that I don't deserve it, but because I think that you are a pussy if you just go around neg repping people because you don't like what they have to say instead of taking the time to actually offer a counter point of view in the thread.
anyone that I negative rep, which is rare, is just because they are being a total fuckhead and saying some whack shit that makes no sense and no one could intelligently debate. and I aways tell them that to thier face (well at least in the thread) in front of everyone else. Of course then I always get neg rep back from them in "retaliation". How immature, but what do you expect?

One thing that I've found that I can do to get over the issue of me not spreading enough rep is to look for old posts by members with closed accounts and give them rep. That way the system sees that I'm repping other people and will let me get back to whoever I was gonna rep in the first place than if I wait for it to let me on its own. If DvC, Slowhand, Lady Love, Lone Gunman, etc. were to reopen their accounts they would find that their profile pages contain nothing but rep from me for posts that they made many, many years ago. :1orglaugh
