The right wing radical generic Conservatives in the GOP sure like to use immigration whenever it is politically convenient and it's interesting to see the Tea Party not protesting against Big Brother government in Arizona that is gleefully racial profiling and intimidating Brown skinned folks who's only crime is being Brown and possibly a registered Democratic voter. And both parties are failing the American's who built this country by playing POLITICS with a clear cut issue of not ENFORCING FEDERAL LAW to pander to get Latino votes. The irony is that polls show over 70% of LEGAL Latinos FAVOR tougher immigration laws, or enforcement of the current ones.

Stop making a political issue out of something that is a huge problem not only for US citizen's economic interests, but for national security.

Not really relevant since our constitution spells out different protections for it's people than theirs.

The right against being detained simply because the cops think you're here illegally isn't a right that protects illegals...it is a right protecting Americans.

Don't see what's so hard to get about that...even if you don't mind and freely consent that doesn't mean someone else should hand over their right against it too.

It's not draconian, it simply buffers the very law(s) that are in place.
You know, every once in a while, people and politicians alike need a kick in the ass and here it is.

They are already able to arrest illegals upon suspicion and they can deport them within the law.

This is just a law leading to a bunch of lawsuits. As soon as they pull over a mexican-american that is a naturalized american citizen because his brother over here legally with a green card looks strange in the passenger seat.

Thats what I think as well ,a lot of so called small government conservatives seemingly have no problem with BIG BROTHER govt here demanding identity cards.This whole idea of the state (the police) being allowed to just stop people on the flimsiest of excuses and demand they show thier papers(reminiscent of the kind of thing the gestapo would do)should be something all americans left or right are concerned with.

As Benjamin Franklin said "Those who would give up liberty (the right to travel without govt intervention such as ID checks) for a little security (trying to catch illegals) deserve neitheir".

CNN reports the law is currently being revised. Clarifing such undefined terms as "lawful contact".

IMO This law is going to cost AZ $20-50mil before they say screw it or leave it overturned in court. I'm glad AZ must have so much surplus money in their budget they can afford nonsense laws like this.

Kermit Roosevelt, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School doesn't think the law will be overturned solely on the grounds that it violates protections against unreasonable searches like many have claimed, because "the [Arizona] law requires police officers to have 'reasonable suspicion' of illegal conduct before authorizing a stop.'' Where the law runs into troubled waters, according to Roosevelt, is the enforcement of the law, which might be interpreted as discriminating on racial grounds in violation of the Equal Protection Clause.

Supporters of the bill dismiss the suggestion it will lead to racial profiling since the law prohibits the use of race or nationality as a sole basis for an immigration check. The Arizona governor's office has additionally developed a training course to help officers learn whether or not to check a person's immigration status.

However well intentioned the Arizona law is in preventing immigrants from pouring through the borders illegally, the law as it is written, is open to different interpretation on what constitutes a "reasonable search," which carries with it the potential of civil rights court challenges on grounds that it violates the Fourth Amendment, which protects against "unreasonable searches.''
