Ask an American Person.......

robbied196

FreeOnes is pumping through my veins!
In Britain we've just had Celebrity Hell's Kitchen on the TV won by ex Dynasty actress Linda Evans :) Being the only American in the series, the rest being British, she raised the question of what the english word 'Wanker' meant. Obviously, this was very funny for us Brits as 'wanker' is one of our favorite words :) A 'wanker' being a reference to a person who masterbates.

So, the question is, what word do you guys use for the term 'wanker'?

I like to use the word jerkoff, like "Hey, that Johnny guy, he's a real friggin jerkoff".

Look in the game section, this thread already exists.

Why are you American's coy when describing the toilet? You use plenty of euphemisms such as 'the rest room'.

We in the UK have a phalanx of words to describe the toilet.

1), The Bog
2), The Karzee
3), The Loo
4), The Dump Station

Wanker = It's one of those [wanker] words that, no matter how [wanker] many times you hear, read or [wanker] say it, it just gets [wanker] funnier..
I could say it out [wanker] loud for hours and still [wanker] find it amusing [waaannnkkkeeerr]

A hillbilly lives in the mountains of Appalachia, a redneck is just a crude white person typicaly from the South.

They aren’t really completely different places. Much of Appalachia is in the South.

Side note: The people that settled Appalachia were predominantly of Scottish and Scotch-Irish decent. (Relatives of mine) One theory on the name “hillbilly” is that the term might actually originally come from Ulster. Supposedly it was a derogatory term referring to the Scotts who settled in Ulster’s hills in the late 1600’s, were Protestant and so sided with William of Orange over James II.

Mountain men are completle different than rednecks. True both might use the same slang and slightly similar accent but they are completly different,.
It would be like saying Scots and English are the same becuase they are on the same isle and have a similar accent.

I met a lass from Seattle once and asked her why Americans called the toilet a John..

She said she'd never heard of that expression. Is it a local thing to certain states?

In 1596, John Harrington invented an indoor water closet for Queen Elizabeth I. But Harrington then published a book with tasteless puns about his own invention. The toilet then dropped into obscurity for nearly 200 years.

The American word for toilet, "john", is called after the John Harington mentioned above.

So why is this thread not in the general discussion forum along with the "Ask a British Person" thread. I call discrimination.
