I'm in a self reflective mood and it is depressing me. :(

*sigh*

I was going to title this thread, "What did you want to be when you were a child?" but, a lot of people, including myself, aren't really grown up yet. So, you can answer either question.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

Or

What do you want to be when you grow up? ;)

I wanted to be a paleontologist. Dinosaurs were fucking awesome when I was a kid. Still are. But somewhere around Gr.9 I suddenly lost any motivation to succeed and lost any direction I may have had in my life didn't snap out of it until I graduated college.

Now, I have a love for the stars and I think I would like it to become more than a hobby.

So. How many people let their childhood dream escape them? Or how many people have that dream within their grasp?

DISCUSS.

I wanted to be a equine veterinarian. However, money and bad math grades conspired against me. ;-)

I remember, I wanted to be a Meerkat when I was a kid. Actually now that I think about it, I'd still like to be one. :dunno:

Well for the most redneck answer, I always wanted to be a pro bass fisherman or have my own hunting show.

I would love to have my own hunting show now, or at the least a hunting store.

I wanted to be an airline pilot.

Nice thread/post STD

Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.
I wanted to be a paleontologist.

Me too. Dinosaurs were my crack. I could rattle of names of species like my little cousins used to talk about pokemon characters, and tell you what period they lived in and how big they were. And then I saw Jurasic park, and learned that there were people who made a living digging up dinosaurs and learning all about them, and they were called paleontologists. That movie changed my life. Until I got to be about twelve years old or so.

I think I could maybe tell you a dozen different kinds of dinos if I tried real hard right now. I don't know exactly what happened. I kind of shifted geek gears, from dinosaurs to music. I think that had alot to do with it.

You don't want to know what I really want to be. But I always enjoyed astronomy and oceanography.

FreeOnes turned me straight!
A cowboy (watched a lot of westerns), and a cop. I've been on the other side of the law enough to never realize my dream of being a policeman, and being a cowboy isn't what it used to be.

The one and only.
I wanted to be a teacher when I was a kid. Now that I am one, I'm going back to college to get another degree in something else because I'm miserable. Go figure, I hate my dream job.

First, I wanted to be a baseball player. Only problem was, I wasn't very good. Yeah, I could make all of the "I was real good, until my coach..." crap, but, quite simply, I have the athletic ability of a bookshelf.
I was into dinosaurs big time, myself. This was way before Jurassic Park - only problem was, they kept changing the names of the sons of bitches. So, there went that.
I was also into astronomy, quite a bit. The Cosmos series with Carl Sagan had me hooked there. To be quite honest, I am not really sure why I didn't pursue it...I think my persona would have fit in the industry quite perfectly.

And, for a long time (and still), I have my writing passion. I worked in the newspaper industry briefly, but the writing style did not fit mine at all. Mine is more of a creative and free-flowing style. I still write, quite a bit - even had a shitty book published with a shitty publisher - but I doubt the dream will ever die, no matter the success or lack there of.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an archeologist. I had a series of shit jobs from the age of 17 to 26 just to earn enough for rent, etc. Fortunately I managed to put a little money aside every week and now I'm in the first year of my archeology course, so life's not so bad! :)

It's never too late to do what you want to do.

I'm actually in the rare position of being able to say I'm doing exactly what I dreamed of doing. It is pretty miraculous, really, to get up every day and be excited about going to work and interested in what I do once I get there.

This is not to rub it in! But it is possible to live the dream.

But, now that I read this thread, I'm no Meerkat...

I never really knew what I wanted to be, I was kinda aimless.
I wish I took more advantage of some opportunities I had.
All in all though I am pretty happy with what I am doing right now.
I truly enjoy the time I have spent fighting for first contracts, working on organizing drive's, working on political action campaigns, etc..
Plus it gives me the chance to interact with people from all walks of life.
