When I was small I wanted to be an astronaut. My eyesight failed, so there went that one.
Strangest thing. One afternoon I was washing dishes. I was about 9 or ten. As I stood there, suddenly in my mind's eye I had an image of myself on a stage, singing my own songs in front of a full audience of people. This was in South Africa.
In my mid teens I had a dream, where van Halen walked up to me in the grounds of a baseball stadium. He told me that I could pursue my dream.
Someone had told me that the dreams you remember are the ones you are meant to know. Well, I was just too chicken scared to up and leave. I let myself be talked out of leaving the country.
I would very likely have landed up in Hollywood as an actor. I am no Brad Pitt, but am good looking enough to be a shoe in for casting agencies. I also have a flair for the dramatic, and acting ability. I would have come back here to the States, taken my guitar to Nashville, and hammered away there, if I had had enough courage.
Sleeping under the stars just didn't appeal to me. Ninny. I could have gone into a shelter. If I had known about the States then what I know now. Suffice it to say, if anyone goes hungry in this town, they are either stubborn or handicapped. Look at Billy Ray Cyrus. It took him ten years, but he finally had a smash hit with 'Achey Breaky Heart.' No marvelous song, but it made him rich and put him on front of a camera for a hit TV series. Same with whathisname - Nicole Kidman's hubbie. Heck Rose McGowan slept on the streets of L.A.
The good news is, I did eventually land up playing. I played as a one man band, as a duo, in several bands, even traveling to the Middle East at one stage with the last one I was in. So thank God for that. I had humungous heaps of fun playing on my own. Driving home late at night from gigs, hurtling down the highway, all alone in the night. Ever eaten 5 star hotel food on a regular basis? Or slept in splendid accommodations? The best. You should have seen my collection of shampoo and conditioner bottles. I still have some fancy ass soap from a 5 star hotel in Dubai.
Right now I am at Beauty School. I told people I would NEVER be able to work as a hairdresser. Too complicated and standing all day. Cut to me standing all day. Well, not quite yet. I did arrange people's hair in my head for the longest time, so I am most grateful for this opportunity.
There is also a book I was supposed to finish long ago already. I must finish it, if it is the last thing I do.
As for film, TV and records. Yikes, looking at all the drama the artists go through, well, mind you, you just need one hit to make it.
