Barack Vs Dick

Out of the woods the former VP Dick has come out as the number one defender of the past administration "harsh interrogation tactics". Which has turned on the current Speaker instead of the intended "witch hunt" they wanted to start. So here comes Obama to the rescue in trying to win over this debate. Why not send good ol Biden to take on the Dick?

Barack Obama, Dick Cheney plan dueling speeches

President Barack Obama will attempt to regain control of a boiling debate over anti-terrorism policy with a major speech on Thursday — an address that comes on the same day that former Vice President Dick Cheney will be weighing in with his own speech on the same theme.

The dueling speeches amount to the most direct engagement so far between Obama and his conservative critics in the volatile argument over what tactics are justified in detaining and interrogating suspected enemy combatants.

The national security debate — egged on by frequent charges from Cheney that Obama is leaving the country more vulnerable to attack — is the only subject on which many Republicans believe they have been able to gain traction against a popular president and the Democratic majority that now dominate Washington.

This is happening for real, It's not made up.

President Barack Obama plans to say in his speech Thursday that the U.S. lost its way in fighting terrorism over the last eight years by failing to trust its institutions and values, according to an administration official.

Obama will also renew his pledge to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying he will honor the commitment he made in the first week of his presidency.

In a remarkable split-screen presentation of opposing world views, former Vice President Dick Cheney will speak on the exact same topic moments after Obama finishes. Cheney is appearing at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, where the audience will watch the president on large TV screens.

Cheney will say: “When President Obama makes wise decisions, he deserves our support. And when he mischaracterizes the national security decisions we made in the Bush years, he deserves an answer.”

Cheney will argue that his intent is not to look backward, but will say that a truthful telling of history is necessary to inform our choices going forward. “Though I'm not here to speak for George W. Bush, I am certain that no one wishes the current administration more success in defending the country than we do,” Cheney will say. “What I want to do today is set forth the strategic thinking that drove our policies.”

Both the president and Cheney will rest a good part of their case on effectiveness, with the president saying the last administration’s approach to fighting terror was not effective, and Cheney arguing that those programs are the reason there has been no second Sept. 11.

Guantanamo Bay is not closing. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0509/22677.html

In a clear setback for President Barack Obama, Senate Democrats moved Tuesday to both wipe out $80 million in new funding for the closing the Guantanamo detention facility and bar the administration from moving prisoners to U.S. soil until there is a more detailed plan provided to lawmakers.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) confirmed the decision, which follows intense pressure from Republicans going into debate over a $91.3 billion wartime spending bill expected to come to the floor late Tuesday.

“We’ll wipe out all the money,” Inouye said, “And I’ll put in a provision that says none of the funds in this bill or any other bill can be used to pay for the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo to the United States.”

Inouye held out the option that Obama could still seek funding as part of the regular Defense and Justice Department appropriations bills for the new fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. But at this stage, securing the money now—without an approved plan—was a “non-starter,” he said.

Following House debate last week on the same bill, Obama is left with no money and less flexibility than when he first made his funding request this spring.

Cheney has zero credibility IMO. I understand why people keep sticking mics in front of his face, why anyone believes a word (on the occasion when you can actually parse out what he's saying) that comes out of the speakers connected to those mics is a mystery to me.

The guy has shown he will say just about anything truth be damned.

Like Barack Obama tells the truth. None of them has credibility. I do however believe that a lot of people did know about the waterboarding and other issues. They are lying to save their asses. :2 cents:

Safe to say we are not going to agree on this one so no need for a back and forth.

But there is a difference between deceit and untruth.

Deception (also called beguilement, deceit, bluff, or subterfuge) is the act of convincing another to believe information that is not true, or not the whole truth as in certain types of half-truths.

In an effort to stop me from swallowing seeds from fruit that I ate as a kid, my mother told me that if I kept swallowing them, they would grow in my stomach. I understood as I got older that was untruthful. That untruth didn't cause me to then believe that my mother was now untrustworthy.

That is the practical difference between being deceptive versus merely being untruthful. People who perpetrate deceptions usually foreclose whatever trustworthiness you had in them.

Cheney, Rumsfeld and their ilk abused their positions for years because Congress was more interested in keeping their seats than doing what is best for the country. The past regime will never even be tried for their misdeeds because this country is too divided about the issue. If a Republican "family-value" Senator is found to be having cyber sex with an under-age page, instead of the party outing the guy as a piece of shit, they claim it is a left-wing witch hunt. Our party system is broken and most people are too indifferent to bring or want change.

Both sides castigate each other. GOPers just have a louder, more organized echo chamber.

Pelosi issue is a perfect example, which different caucuses in the Democratic party run to the side of the issue that is safe. GOPers are great at finding a scab no matter how small or insignificant and picking at it until it ulcers.

GOPers have a issue that's bad for them....they go on the attack. Demos have an issue that's bad for them and they backtrack, go on the defensive and play damage control.

It would be a funny game if it weren't so sad.

Here's Dick Cheney 3 weeks ago was in real legal jeopardy...but his assault has turned the issue toxic for Demos....EVEN THOUGH Cheney doesn't have a leg to stand on..Amazing!

It doesn't help when the supposed left-wing media drops the real issue to spread the smoke screen. This is a perfect example of how our media is a pawn of the state and not a watchdog of it.

I just think the media has been herded into a corner by a 20 year GOP smear campaign maligning them with some fictional "liberal media bias" attack.

While I think there are some in the media here and there who may have allowed their personal beliefs to somewhat affect their reporting it isn't nearly the widespread conspiracy GOPers have made it to be.

But that's another example of picking on a tiny, insignificant scab and creating an ulcer.

Telling children white lies are not the same thing. Adults lying are a whole other subject. Republicians and Democrats are both liars.

Yes blame the GOP. The Democrats have not spread lies in the last 20 years. The GOP is also behind Swine Flu, AIDS, and Adam Lambert losing American Idol.

I have written in many threads here I think both parties should be ashamed of what they have turned our political process into. they are there for the perks, the celebrity and keeping their office. Why are there no feared politicians like Jesse Helms used to be? Like Tip O'Neal used to be? Because they are there to keep the ball rolling and to be re-elected. Their hypocracy is exceeded only by their ineptness

Like I said at the beginning of this, we're not going to agree. You've convinced yourself that all politicians lie equally. I disagree but since you feel that way, this thread ought to be moot to you. And for purposes of this particular subject, Barack vs. Dick... even if you believe that all politicians are liars generally, that's still different from a guy who has clearly, repeatedly and deliberately lied about the most important of issues as easy as he takes a breath.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here in the context of my post you were responding to as it was the GOP who've complained about some "liberal media bias". That was fiction.

Re: Swine flu...that was stupid assed Michelle Bachman insinuating there was some connection to Swine flu, Jimmy Carter and Obama. But the idiot failed to realize before she opened her fly trap that the earlier swine flu outbreak occurred under Gerry Ford.

Yes we will have to disagree. I do like to read your postings. It is nice when people are not afraid to speak their minds. I respect people like yourself that say what you think no matter what may be said back to you. Kudos.
