Just got Caprica from Netflix and watched it last night. I gotta say, that is one hell of a pilot episode. As good as the BSG pilot, IMO. The cast and characters are strong (with a few exceptions... Lacy and Sam Adama need some work if they're going to be anything more than side characters). The premise is rock solid, and succeeds at both standing on its own and connecting with BSG. Yeah, there's a lot of the religion-talk that turned off some people, but I appreciate a show that's not afraid to tread on some toes to discuss a relevant cultural issue. Comments/thoughts from anyone who's seen it?
Well, I haven't seen it yet, but I definitely plan on doing so, as I really liked the BSG remake.
But to say, that the Caprica pilot is as good as the BSG pilot, raises my expectations quite a lot. I mean, the mini-series, which is usually considered the pilot of BSG, is more than three hours long and one of the best pieces of sci-fi television I've ever seen.
And I don't mind the discussion of religious topics. BSG already did that alot and half the time you couldn't be sure whether the creators of the series are too religious or just too curious about religious philosophy, morality and thinking.
But good to see, that the pilot seemingly wasn't bad. Let's hope for the best.
So did anybody catch the Caprica Season 1.5 marathon last week? As far as I know, that was the series finale. As much as I tried, I just never could REALLY get into this series. But I think they did a pretty decent job of wrapping it up. I enjoyed the Godfatheresque elements in the final couple of episodes anyway. And it kind of struck me as funny how Polly Walker played the same type of character in this show that she played in Rome: a lying, manipulative biatch.
I doubt the writers knew for certain that the series was going to be killed off, so I think they did a good job of making the final episodes make sense... for the most part.
And this new BSG related series... what's it all about? I think it's called "Blood & Chrome" or something.
I tried to watch the pilot and lost interest after about the first 15 minutes. It was supposed to be a sci fi show but Im somehow stuck watching antics of some immature adolescent teenager. *Click*
I think BSG as a whole was a failure. I tried watching the show from the pilot episode and after about the second season (I think) I realised it was the most boring thing on television.
The premise for the show was a good one. But the execution was flawed and frankly I dont think they had the content to string it properly over however many seasons it ran.
Once the whole "Is she a cylon? Is he a cylon? Am I a cylon!!!" shit started, thats when i turned over. It felt like I was watching invasion of the body snatchers repackaged.
Another spin off eh? You would think given caprica was cancelled in its first season, theyd learn the lesson that no one is interested anymore.
I'm sorry, but I cant put it anymore politely. BSG = Shit sci fi, of a reasonably similair quality of stargate and andromeda - two of the largest nuggets in the toilet bowl of shit sci fi. It mightve been more polished with higher production value, but you cant polich a turd and expect it to shine.
I've never seen an episode of BSG but decided to watch the first half of Caprica when it was on. I thought it was a cool show and wanted to see the second half when it came back. The second half started and I was bored out of my mind. Haven't watched it since and I'm no longer interested in anything having to do with BSG. I'll stick to V.
I agree. I just think the Caprica writers should have spent more time developing the characters and moving the story along in Season 1, and less time trying to imitate The Matrix. I wasn't a huge BSG fan, but I did see most of the last couple of seasons and came to enjoy it. Once the music ("All Along the Watchtower") started playing in the heads of the (unknowing) Cylons onboard Galactica, it got really interesting to me.
I wanted to like Caprica. I only have a small handful of shows that I think are worth watching, and I hoped this would be one of them. But when they started devoting almost entire episodes to Zoe playing Warrior Princess in the virtual reality, I stopped watching it. I did catch the Season 1.5 wrap-up and I thought that was actually pretty good. With the Adama family and the origins of the Cylons (and their monotheist beliefs) they had SO much to work with... and it seems like they wasted that until they found out the hammer was coming down on the series.
Maybe the writers of Blood & Chrome will learn a lesson from how Caprica went out, and they won't make the same writing mistakes.
Also, a buddy just told me that Stargate Universe got canceled too. That's another show that I wanted to like, but which suffered (IMO) from weak, ponderous writing.
P.S. This compilation includes some of my favorite scenes from BSG. I like the way they strung this plot line out, and then slowly put the puzzle back together. Only in the final scenes of Caprica did they do anything similar (or as good) as this, IMO.
I haven't seen it, mainly because I watch ALL of the "new" BSGs. It was good, but the middle seasons were crappy, and the ending way not very satisfying.
