Well, I'm a San Diego State alumni, and an avid fan of the SDSU men's basketball team. A big part of me is wondering when the university (BYU) was made aware of this "Honor Code" violation. Something tells me that the administration was aware of this before the Cougars played SDSU last weekend, and just waited until after the biggest game of the season for both teams to go public with it, I would bet on it. Seriously, BYU @ SDSU Saturday, and this info is released on the following Monday? That seems like way too convenient of a timeline for this to have been addressed as "promptly" as they are making it out to seem. Of course this feeling could just be my sour grapes at the fact BYU trashed us on our home floor. But, still...
If this (my theory about avoiding action until after the SDSU matchup) is indeed true, I really fail to see the "Honor" in any of it. The "Honor Code" is simply a tool of the BYU administration to apply whenever, however and to whomever they please to control the students and ensure complete control over them. And what if this had happened to lilly white, golden boy Jimmer Fredette, and not black, role player Brandon Davies (both are non-members of the Mormon church BTW)? Would the outcome/punishment have still been the same? I sincerely doubt it.
Live by the code and die by the code, I suppose. Unless your name is Jimmer Fredette and you are the nation's leading scorer. Cougar fans, say goodbye to the Final Four! :2 cents:
