'NEEED' is a relative term meester. I don't really want to mince the semantics of need vs. want in the context of the industrial revolution but you do realize the undertaking was still a choice right? Albeit a wise one..still a choice.

With respect to today's influx of immigrant/migrant, the only thing I know from a practical standpoint is they wouldn't be coming here (or going to New York) if there wasn't the ability for them to make a living. Call that what you want but if there wasn't some demand for them they wouldn't be able to make a living.

What does it all mean with respect to this thread? The subject of the thread is a reflection of what human beings (and animals) have done since the history of life on our planet....go where they needed to go for resources. But the story reports it as some displacement of one (type of) human for another... which is just an artificial, man-made construct IMO.

The real story simply is humans are going to where they can thrive. When the resources are no longer there for them to thrive...they will go somewhere else.

There's another, recent thread about the plight of Detroit here. There is not a more quintessential illustration of the point than the contrast between this subject and that one. There are places where you could literally go and have shelter in the form of a house for free in Detroit but people (humans) are leaving the place. Why? Because the resources are no longer there for the current amount of people to thrive...survive even.

I didn't misread anything ("once again...." :1orglaugh), Trident. I think it is fascinating that you proclaim to have the definitive book on how liberals feel about whites who are proud to be white. Can you tell me what page that "liberal white guilt" things is on?

It's your opinion and that's fine but don't present something as being a fact when there is no reference given to indicate that it is other than because you say so.

I'd opine that if someone feels guilty about something they probably have a damned good reason for feeling that way and being liberal or conservative or somewhere in between has little or nothing to do with it. However, that's just my opinion so take it for what it's worth.

Less attention is paid to how white guilt manifests itself among white conservatives. And recent ideological convert Mamet, based on my reading of Rosenberg's summary, appears to offer a pretty good example in his latest play.

Among conservatives, white guilt manifests itself as a persistent fear that blacks are, just below the surface, filled with a simmering wrath they intend to inflict upon white people at any given moment. Just as with liberal white guilt, black people aren't so much people as they are the vehicles of white redemption. In either case, black people are fundamentally the sum of their grievances toward white people -- it is impossible for the guilty white liberal, or the guilty white conservative, to imagine that we have lives of our own. It is equally impossible for these people to imagine that racism does damage society as a whole, rather than just to black people or other minorities.

It's really not hard to imagine why such a narrative would appeal to a certain kind of audience -- American culture is veined with guilt of all sorts, from missing Church on Sunday to breaking your diet by noshing on a doughnut, so products that alleviate guilt are in high demand.
