Champions League Thread 2010/11 (Soccer)

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
Thought I'd start a much needed thread as the competition reaches the crucial quarter-finals. Valencia were held at home to Schalke whilst my team Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur) snatched a great victory at AC Milan :) in a controversial match where Milan midfielder made a complete fool of himself and was unbelievably only shown a yellow card

AC Milan 0 - 1 Tottenham

Valencia 1 - 1 Schalke 04

Thought Flamini should have had a red for his tackle on Corluka.

Gattuso is such an angry guy :p

Don't pick a fight with Joe Jordan!

Tottenham is really a very good team this season.

Tonight, I hope Barcelona will win, I hope they'll win the CL. And I also hope MU is gonna blow Marseille away 'cause, as true Paris-SG fan that I am, Marseille is the Enemy :thefinger
yep :D

i like European football in general, madrid is my fave
But if you were a true "madridisto" you'll support Arsenal against Barcelona 'cause, to a real Madridisto, nothing's worst than Barcelona (except maybe Atletico Madrid)

MaxPleasureITA

You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
I support A.c.Milan but yesterday Gattuso has dishonored the History of the team... especially because yesterday he was the captain. Historic captains of Milan (for example Baresi and Maldini) have never done these ridiculous scenes.
I hope in a better figure in London...

Well, we forget the other pairing tonight!

AS Roma (Italy) vs. FC Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)

Arsenal FC (England) vs. FC Barcelona (Spain)

Oh dear, I must see if I can find a channel that shows the other game ^^

My bet:

Roma wins, and Barca, too.

But just imagine if Shaktar would ass-whip the italians. Man,t hose guys would tear down the club house, after all the b/s with Berlusconi and Bunga Bunga with Ruby :1orglaugh

Berlusconi reminds me of 'Nucky Thompson' from Boardwalk Empire. Or if you haven't seen that yet (which you should) then perhaps I should just say... any old capo from a crime syndicate in the 1920s. That guy is gangster. and I don't mean that as a positive thing :p

I'm betting on Arsenal (for having the home 'advantage' and generally a stronger team this year) and Donetsk (because, well, just because) o.o

i live in the states, didnt know it was like that. lionel is a great player, perhaps that is why i want them to win.

If you just look at it in simple footballing terms then there's no reason you can't like both. However if you looker deeper into the histories and ideologies behind the two teams you would either support one or the other, often depending on your political views. First of all they are both from the two biggest cities in Spain so there are obvious rivalries there, further more these cities are in 'two very distinct regions and two distinct schools of thought. Barcelona is Catalan, Madrid is Castilian. Catalans favour independence, while Madrid is seen as the seat of the establishment and the royal family. This split became especially pronounced during Franco’s fascistic reign when regional languages like Catalan were officially suppressed. So when El Clásico (Barcelona vs Real Madrid) rolled around, a Barcelona win represented a rebellious victory for an independent regional culture, a win for Madrid represented the establishment re-asserting its authority. And it still does.'

For this reason I've always supported Barcelona, often associated with free thinking and independence as well as honour, the only shirt sponsor they've ever had was for the charity Unicef, and they paid Unicef rather than vice versa. Real Madrid on the other hand are associated with Fascism (dictator Franco during the Spanish civil war) and the Royal family and many of their supporters have links to far right groups. I also hate the way Real get preferential treatment from Spanish banks, the only reason they have all this money to spend on players is because the bank loans them whatever they want, Barcelona is limited finacially. Barcelona and Real Madrid are more than just football teams, they are also ideals and I'm very happy with what Barcelona represents.

Good football is good football. You can appreciate a good display regardless of whichever team you support :)

Also..
I'm betting on Arsenal (for having the home 'advantage' and generally a stronger team this year) and Donetsk (because, well, just because) o.o

I was right! Cha-ching :D

I've forgotten what the outside world looks like!
What a tremendous game of football in North London tonight, so glad that the KO phase has started after the dreary group stages.
Jack Wilshere was terrific, he's really starting to like the real deal...

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are historical rivals. In fact, the rivalry is bigger than soccer : It's the Ccapital city VS the 2nd biggest city. Also, Barcelona is the biggest city of Catalunya -a very proud part of spain, in wich people consider themselves as catalans way much than spanish, When Span was under Franco dictatorship he tried to anihillate this kind of feeling of independance of the catalans. He never succeed - so it's Catalanyua VS Spain. And since both teams have some players who were trained since they were like 12 in the team's training camps, these players have been told how it is important to alway be ahed of the other team and how it is even more important to beat the other team in ever games they play against each other.

Among alla the rivalries that exists in soccer, Real Madrid VS FC Barcelona is probably the biggest.
