Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation

Don't even get me started on this issue again, I live in Chicago. First, it's important to understand that Chicago is not an island. Although Chicago has historically had strict gun laws, laws in the surrounding parts of Illinois were much laxer-allowing middlemen to supply the criminals in Chicago with guns they purchased elsewhere. Forty three percent of the guns seized by law enforcement in Chicago were originally purchased in other parts of Illinois. And even if the state had stricter gun laws, Illinois is not an island either. The remaining fifty seven percent of Chicago guns all came from out of state, most significantly from nearby Indiana, which is less than an hour's drive from Chicago, and distant Mississippi -neither of which are known for their strict gun laws.

Despite all these strict gun laws, you still have a high criminality rate like in Newark.

Cocaine is illegal nationwide. Heroin is illegal nationwide. Methamphetamine is illegal nationwide. Kiddy porn is illegal nationwide. These items are also illegal worldwide.

I'm not sure where you're going with this, but is it a reduction to the "as laws don't stop 100% of anything, we shouldn't have laws" argument?

I just wanted to quote this again for emphasis. Chicago is a tired, dead-beat horse for this argument that does not hold up. If Illinois started border and customs control to people coming over from other states, maybe.

Where there's demand, there is supply. The reason that the phrase, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" is so worn out is because it is such an obvious truth. Saying that Chicago wouldn't have guns if it wasn't for the rest of the state/country is patently false. And saying that criminals wouldn't have guns if there were more laws is also false. Everything from drugs to exotic pets to human beings get smuggled into the US every day.

Those laws aren't working too well.

Criminals don't care about laws.

Laws like those only hurt regular people.

From what I have read, Chicago also has some of the most lax gun law enforcement in the nation. So what good does a law do if it is not (or barely) enforced?

Same argument can be made for securing our borders.

From my understanding of NRA lobbying, we should give a tax break for any Chicago resident to buy guns and that should reduce crime.

Speaking as a non-partison observer.

neighbor---guns1_o.jpgShooting a Chihuahua in someone's living room doesn't solve a rabies outbreak; removing law abiding gun owners' rights and access to firearms doesn't solve rabid gang and random criminal gun violence. Yet that is the rabid Libs' answer every time...no guns no gun violence.
Chicago's a Democratic bankrupt shithole of a city...like Detroit, etc, all going financially and morally bankrupt under constant Dem administrations.

Non partisan? How about simple-minded? Better and more accurate description.

NRA doesn't say more guns equals less crime, not ever. It correlates the drop in high crime stats with real enforcement of existing laws, funding essential LE activities, zero tolerance of gang activity, etc, and allowing the hardcore citizens to be armed as they see fit.
That and removing a Lib mindset from city government, works pretty well.

Shooting an armed home invader works wonders for reducing home invasion episodes.
Knowing someone may or probably does have a firearm severely reduces the enthusiasm a thief has for illegal activity.

A lot of pawn brokers wear a side arm on a holster in full view. I asked a friend of mine that owns a pawn shop why he didn't do it and he said that if someone came into his store and saw the pistol on his side with the intention of robbery they may shoot him first because they saw it. Once he explained it that way it kinda made sense.

So by your equating guns with human trafficking and drugs, you'd say we also shouldn't bother with laws regarding those, as they aren't 100% effective?

This has always been the more likely conclusion to me of said scenario. Going from "I want money" to "my life is in danger unless I shoot this person immediately" generally isn't a good thought process for one to cause when one has a gun drawn on them. But that, like the counter conclusion, is pure conjecture. I'd love to see me some data on that.

Right. The same argument can be made for that... the war on drugs, prostitution, gambling, traffic enforcement/speeding, etc., etc. Politicians spend too much time putting (meaningless) words on pieces of paper and not enough time figuring out how to make the laws they pass more practical and enforceable.

Why, there ort to be a law!!! :rules:

That is correct. A relatively common sentence in state court for gun possession for offenders without other felonies is one year in prison, which really may mean a penalty of six months. llinois has no requirement, comparable to Chicago’s, that gun owners immediately report their lost or stolen weapons to deter straw buyers. Consequently those outside the city can carry guns to gang members in the city with zero accountability. Anybody who says Chicago has strict gun laws needs to do some research

You're right, criminals don't care about laws. So we should abolish all laws then? the law says do not murder but obviously criminals don't follow that law so we should abolish it

Why are you putting words I didn't say in my mouth and do you realize how fucking irritating it is? If this is how you're going to respond, don't respond at all.

Maybe, but the numbers dont lie. As I wrote in an earlier post, forty three percent of the guns seized by law enforcement in Chicago were originally purchased in other parts of Illinois.
