Mrs Jolly
You can't have everything! Where would you put it?!
Jason me old China (That's cockney rhyming slang - china plate = mate) other people here are pointing out that the USA has often times forged friendships and alliances with regimes which do not aspire to the same lofty goals. Like Martha Stewart, I think this is a good thing, you never know when the wind will change and you might need an ally. Allies with a billion people _ I'm not counting - are some of the best. Anyway as dear old Winnie said, "It is better to jaw jaw than to war war." I would stress that this air of generally symbolic contact is doubly important when dealing with a nation that can impact the welfare of this country just about more than any other.
Enough of that, the benefits of good relations with China are self evident to most of the joined up writing community.
My problem is, as usual, that you throw out these statements of outrage but never propose the "correct" path of action. (As many concerned conservatives are pointing out it seems to be the dominant MO of the current GOP.) How should he USA react? Please tell us.
Should the USA post a set of hard and fast criteria, which if not met will result in diminished relations? Who gets to draw up the list along with you? Personally, I think this would be counter productive for a host of reasons. ie it is unworkable, it ties the hands of diplomats, it creates precedents etc
So Jason, what of it, what is the right action? Define it and point out the relevant benefits. If you are right, I promise I will be the first pat you on the back.
