You do understand that until the Suez Incident of 1956, the US involved itself little in the affairs outside the Americas (the Phillippino islands being a rare exception, and most of our Middle East presence was much like the Chinese now, not nearly as involved as "key partners" like today). After the Suez Incident, the US became the defacto standard military presence for guaranteeing petroleum to France and the UK (now the EU in general) from the Middle East.

The US was ill prepared for WWI and it's largely considered -- other than a few actions by US Marine Corps units -- to be a disaster. The US was also poorly prepared for WWII, and had the Japanese not attacked Pearl Harbor -- or worse yet -- caught the four (4) American carriers at Pearl Harbor, it's questionable if the US wouldn't have "sued for peace" at some point. The US auto industry basically saved us, and even that took a good three (3) years to make a dent. Had we not had our carriers in the Pacific, the Japanese could have made it very, very costly for the US to take any action against any Axis power.

God I cannot believe people who don't understand the real history of the US. It was the Suez Incident where we fucked ourselves, because the French and the British could (and did) reduce their militaries over the next decade as they were no longer involved as the primary military in securing their resources. It's why most of western Europe as returned to "Atlantic engagement" -- because they know it's vital to maintain relations with the US.

Frankly, I wish we would have just stuck with the Americas, like we did largely before 1956.

If you believe that, even if the United States did remain in isolation for the beggining of both wars, that the end result would have been different... or better... if we'd have never gotten involved, even after pearl harbor, you're fooling yourself. These wars would have, at the very least, raged longer. And at the worst... would have been lost to the axis powers.

Most historians accept that the turning point of WWII in Europe was Stalingrad, and the huge USSR input in to offense against Nazi's, coupled with US involvement on the western front in Europe.
