I have dsl (1.5 mb/s) and every time i go to download a vid the speed can never get above like 45 kb/s any ways to get it up

There are comp gurus here, but I have high speed and sometimes the sites I dl from are slow, most are fast, so I believe the sites have somthing to do with that.

Having a fast connection simply means that you are never the data transfer bottleneck. The server at the other end is.

To find out your actual data throughput try:

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

make sure you pick a test server that is not busy. If they are all busy, just wait until one is marked "idle".

I use Roadrunner cable modem. My speeds were 2665 kbps download and 322 kbps upload.

it sayed i had 1.4 down and 740kb/s up why do i download so slow I understand it is due somewhat to the web server but does it really slow me down that much?

yes, it does matter that much. becuase it works like this you can download at 1.4, and upload at 740kbs, and thats pretty good. BUT, if the server's upload is only 1.2, or so, then if only YOU were downloading from the, you would get great transfer, but since the server(im sure) must of been sending out ot many differnt computers, cutting its upload speed in equal parts for every one connected to it. and that is why you were/are getting bad transfer.

how do you figure its faster than T1? there are MANY different speeds for a cable modem, and all of them have horrible up speeds. but T1, has a relativly fast up speed compared to cable. none of this info is esoteric, a simple google search can often answer any computer question. :)

It seems that a lot of people here are confusing "speed" with "throughtput". If you want to download lots of stuff you want high throughput and you don't care about speed (aka latency). If you want to play online games well then you want low latency and you can sacrifice on throughput.

Like the old IT joke: "Sure you can transfer your data via long distance modem call, but you sure can't beat the throughput of sending a truckload of high capacity magnetic tapes!"

When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

the original sentence talked about "download" speed. That is the measurement of downloading data from a site. Period.

Most good cable connections have faster "download" speeds than a T1...it's just that simple. DSL should too. We're not talking about the transfer of data the other way...uploading.

As also mentioned just above....throughput measures webpage pop up ability...and that's where you can get into the 1 meg and 2 meg mentions for "download" speeds.

you don't need to get so technical and perfect in the language....lol.

you are right, sorry about that guys. my repsonce was geared toward this line:

(it's faster than a T1 connection.)

i was just trying to point out that becuase one has a faster down, dosent mean its at all 'faster' than the other. but yes for downloading cable is faster. if you ever plan on hosting ANYTHING cable would not be very good for it at all, as your up speed would cap and that just leads to angry people on the other end wondering why they arent getting a good download from you ;)
