More options in the interface in case something doesn't work (uses ffmpeg, mencoder, mplayer and ffmpeg2theora internally): http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
Both of them should be pretty straightforward to install and use. There are a lot more free programs listed for doing various types of conversions on that site, but these two are what I have at some point installed and used without problems on my computer and thus can be quite sure that there is no malware in them.
Thanks, but it says it works under Windows XP, but I have Windows 7. Also the MS site warns against such programs, that Promise to convert multiple formats. Still I'll look into it.
Ah, damn. It indeed looks like WinFF currently has problems with Windows 7 and the latest version of SUPER has all sorts of toolbar shit bundled! Haven't used it in a while, so I didn't know. Fucking hell!
I tried to transcode a FLV video (downloaded from youtube) with VLC but the result was a corrupted WMV that didn't play past a few seconds before crashing on VLC. WMP actually played it without crashing, but the video was still corrupted.
Then I used WinFF to do the same conversion and the result was flawless. Irritating! There are bug reports for WinFF not working on Windows 7 on their mailing list but I don't think the devs had time to fix that yet.
Excuse me, sir. Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P.
