Could forums be a way of therapy??

DJCowboy

Yes, I bribed and cheated to get this far
I was just thinking of this today. Could message boards be a way of venting or, in other words, be a way to associate yourself with like-minded people? It's like those "Anonymous" groups but you don't have to show up to scheduled meetings or get tokens.

We find a group that accepts a part of us, if not our whole us, as to who we are. The people I personally know would think I'm weird if I told them I think a girl doing ass to mouth is weird but here it is acceptable. You find a group that actually knows and understands your behavior

A couple months ago my dad discovered he had Parkinson's Disease and he's been kind of bummed out (obviously) about it and I recommended trying to find a message board or a forum with other people and he is now actually in a much better mood because he said he realizes he is not alone. He told me he felt trapped and self-pitiful because he was the only one he knew of that had it, but he joined a forum of other sufferers and he says now he feels he understands it better just knowing that there are others who also have it as well. That's when I started thinking of this topic: Could message boards and forums be a kind of group therapy that allows you to be even more anonymous?

Yes, you're as anonymous as you want to be. Real name, fake name, no name... no one cares what your name is, who you are, what kind of car you drive, how many chicks you've been with, etc... all they care about is the same general theme or topic (of the message board). If it's a porn star, then you're all fans (or even haters) of that one person. If it's a medical condition, then you've all been touched by it somehow. (You get the idea.)

I like a lot of somewhat lesser-known musicians. Forums connect me with the other fans, so we can gush about our favorite songs by so-and-so. I also participate in a lot of cuckolding forums, and used to have one on my website. There are so many people out there that don't even really understand cuckolding, so if my insight or thoughts can help them process what they're feeling, then I think it's great.

I've always felt like message boards and forums are an easy way to give us a sense of calm and community, because the others here understand us.

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
Since I discovered Compuserve years ago, I've been a fan of forums and such ever since. Yeah, I think they're a GREAT way to connect with like-minded people... or even people who are not like-minded. You can learn from both.

The "social media" sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., are OK. But on message boards, I think it's MUCH easier to have or begin a general discussion with LOTS of people - you're not required to seek people out here. I'm on a couple of professional boards, and over time I've met more than a few of the people - that's always interesting. I've gotten jobs or made deals just based on meeting someone on a board. On some of the F1 and sports car racing boards I'm on, I've gotten to know some of those people almost like family members. I've been on one for over 11 years now. We share births, deaths, divorces, etc. We know and like each other as "real people" and we often try to help each other out... or at least offer an ear or some words of support when something bad happens. I guess boards like this are a little different, but I think that because people are free to discuss most anything here, it really adds to how interesting this type of board is. And yeah, I think DJ and Jinxy are right: it is kind of therapeutic.

The one and only.
My name is Will.

I work at a college as a janitor even though I feel like I'm smarter than most of the people who go there. Sometimes I see an equation written on a blackboard like half an equation and... I just figure it out.

I should be hunting you. That would be good.

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
I think forums and message boards are absolutely therapy, you can always go empty your mind of all that's affecting you, whether it be something good or bad, something that makes you feel great, or something that is terrible, people can use forums and MB's to see the general consensus of a plethora of subjects.

I @ onetime was feeling very suicidal, back when I was stuck in a holding pattern of purgatory and suffering, and some may see it as a sad thing this forum/MB and few others really saved my life, it gave me the opportunity to voice my mind too people who seemed like they cared, of course there was always an A$$hole that would fuck with you, pushing you to your limit, actually to make a long story short, there was such a member here @ FO's that tormented me to NO end, made me want to hunt a MF'er down like he was OBL.. Well I embarrassed him to the point of him having too close his account, he's probably hiding under the guise of a new member ID but he NO longer fucks with me, and hasn't made himself known. or maybe he just never came back because of the humiliation I served him!! whatever the case maybe it provided an escape for my mind and I survived my epic battle with devil..

I got the help and relief I needed, my life got better, and now I can say FO's saved my life, in a manner of speaking.. not solely FO's but just the escape it provided for me @ the time when I needed things to distract me from my pain @ that time. Thank You FREEONE'S.
:D

AFK..being taken to the vet to get neutered.
I found FO during just about the worst time in my life. I am absolutely convinced that without the distraction it provided, without the channel it gave me to just switch off and have fun, I might not have made it past the bottom of the pit I was in.

So, to answer the OP ... yes, totally.

You know, I always knew there was something wrong with the people on this forum...

EDIT: Okay, before someone starts attacking me. I'm joking.

Seriously, I agree with the OP. ... I gave up smoking about 12 months or so ago and to not relapse I stopped going out in the evenings and stayed at home a lot more. But I was getting bored shitless, but when I joined the boards here it did help a lot.

Now. I'm still smoke free and I'll never smoke again. .. Unless I hear the worlds ending or something like that. :D

Just have to work on my drinking and I'll be golden. .. :2 cents:

Okay, I know I've not been terribly serious in this thread, but the truth is that I joined this forum after an unbelievable, inconceivable tragedy in my life. Logging in was mentally checking out for me for a while.

Damn. Do I have to pay Petra and Roald therapist fees now?

I can set my own custom title!
I don't know about therapy- I mean, you use therapy to fix things, and how do you fix bad things in your life by simply asking a bunch of anonymous people what to do? We used to have that problem on these boards with people who would post "I've got these red lumps on my cock? What do you guys think it is? What should I do?"

There almost needed to be a "Go to the doctor, dipshit" rubber stamp for that.

It's the internet- people will not only tell you their opinion- they will tell you yours is wrong, and from the anonymity of their computer in their mom's basement, they'll tell you they'll meet you anywhere, any time. Of course, they say that to 14 year old girls (meaning 55 year old men) too, and they can, because everyone on the internet is 7 feet of pure muscle with a black belt in something and a foot long cock that's done everything and been everywhere.

That cover it? :D I say relax, have fun, and everyone quit being so FECKING POLITICAL all the time. Life's too short- let's look at boobs.

Could Internet forums be a form of therapy?...maybe. I guess a lot of them are in a sort of way or end up as a community of their own. They can help people bond to each other and to people they wouldn't be able to otherwise. I'll be honest, I also like a lot of people here better than a lot of people I know in real life.

Now can forums also be used as a way to waste lots and lots and lots of time, oh hell yes. ;)

...by the way, I still think ass to mouth is kind of weird. :1orglaugh
