Dayton Police Lower Standards: 'F' Now a Passing Score For Recruits

The Dayton Police Department is lowering its testing standards for recruits. It’s a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.

Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.

Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.

The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.

Why anyone would wanna be a cop is beyond me. The suicide rate, cardiac issues, and so on are the highest among occupations. I went to a small private school in elementary with a real nice kid who's dad blew his brains out. Shocked the whole family.

It's outrageous, and a safety concern as well, wouldn't you think? But maybe they can't man their force up. Dayton must be a bit of a dump, but I'd have to take someone's word otherwise.

Nobody wants to be a cop, apparently. The highest risk profession, but still. I know cops I went to school with and they were all sharp individuals.

It would be interesting to take the test for shits and giggles to see what exactly the "racially biased" questions are. You cannot drop the qualification score; that seems like a blatant security risk to me. :2 cents:

coming from a LEO family, thats fucking bullshit. when i apply for a department, i dont want the job given to me. if they dont like what they see in me the first time, then ill improve what i can and try again.

it is true to say that departments are having a crucially hard time getting people to apply. no one wants to a cop like they used to. but people like my friends and i are going to school, getting an education in criminology and keeping the faith, cause thats whats needed

I had a soon-to-be cop sitting right behind me in my last poli-sci course last semester and I asked him, "you know what you're getting into, right"? He didn't seem to mind much at all, even though it's a pretty damn sizable city I reside in and yes, there is the occasional 187. Nice guy and very composed, so I believe he very much will succeed. He was also quite a bit bigger than me as well and I'm 6'0" and at around 200 lbs right now.

I think it is rather dumb really. People aren't forced to join the military in this country barring some war on epic proportions. I think the appropriate thing to ask is why more Blacks and Hispanics aren't joining the military. The numbers aren't really all that bad either when you look at it compared to the percentage of the population each group makes up.:2 cents:
