Do you tip your barber?

No_Man

Would you hit it?
Just got back from getting my hair cut and once again faced the dilemma of whether or not I should include a tip for it. I know my wife tips her hair stylist heavily. Then again, my wife gets a full cut, styling, and coloring that takes up to a full hour, whereas I'm getting a 10 min cut that a trained baboon could do. Even so, I wonder whether I'm being impolite by not including a tip. Thoughts?

Hi, No_Man -

I always do, 15 - 20 percent. I don't think that barbers would bother doing what they do if they didn't receive tips.

Everything averages out for hair dressers & barbers, one appt may be brief while the others might be extended. OTOH, Let me ask, do you know how your barber charges ? If your cut seems expensive you may ask if tips are included.

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
A tip is always nice if you can afford it. Plus, it'll hopefully ensure that you receive good service the next time.

Our brit posters may be able to confirm, but they think us Americans tip way too much. When we were in Cancun, they were shocked that I tipped the the bartender a little bit every time. I didn't think it was a big deal. I was only giving him like a $1 evertime I got a couple of drinks.

I still tip my hair stylist though.

Here brings up another question. Do you go to a barber or a hair stylist. I use a stylist and go to a salon. Not because I'm super fancy and need to, but that's just been the way I've done it my whole life. I've always had women cutting my hair. I have a buddy that won't let a woman touch his hair. And he's not a metro or anything like that.

He just feels hair trimming should be left to the barber.

They come at a premium, believe me !

I've tried tirelessly, over and over to master the technique of cutting the hair on the back of my head using two mirrors, one in front and the other nearest my right butt cheek. but to no avail. Everything appears in the reverse dimension !! Up becomes down, right becomes the left :hammer: ......... back to the barber or girl friend I went. :o

I cut my own hair, I basically have only two haircuts. 1) A little long and 2) when I've shaven it off. That's pretty easy to maintain by yourself. So there's no need to pay someone to do it.

Unless of course you count the occasional handjob as a "tip"?

Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference.
As a standard, aren't gratuities already included in the price of services in UK and Europe ?

I'm thinking that certain entities in the states have adopted this 'policy'.

There is certainly never an obligation to leave a tip. It's just something I do as a way of showing my appreciation for a job well done. Be it at a restaurant or at the barber shop.

No tip. I pay $20 for essentially 10 minutes of work.
