Does your city have residential alleys?

Parts of the city here have residential alleys - I think they are brilliant. The trash collection and so forth can happen there with no effect on traffic. Same is true of the utilities - power and gas and so forth can all come in from the alley, and when those things need to be worked on, no blockage of the streets.

Another nice thing that happens here is that you can volunteer to do the snow removal of your own alley for a hefty reduction in your property taxes.

Plus, it's fun to walk through the alleys - easier to spy on the neighbours.

I live in the suburbs. What we call "alleys" are just grass paths between fences. If you're getting chased by some thugs (hasn't happened to me lately), you can lose them like that.

I think we have the same thing where I live but there is nothing and friendly and residential about them.

Yes, they tend to be found in many of the deprived areas. Which means if you ever come across one you will invariably find it teeming with garbage, vermin and the kind of person you wouldn't think twice about pissing on if they were on fire just so you could have the satisfaction of strangling them to death afterwards.
