Doesn't matter how hard you work, an employer always wants more.

From september first to sixth there a big boat show in the Netherlands called the HISWA wich is one of the largest shows in Europe and we had to get three boats done for the show but due to some people (who do office work at the shipyard, it's walways them) the planning was just terrible as usual so the carpenters and painters had to get three days of work done in one day. This meant working through the night wich nobody was happy about. I felt really bad for them so even tho I'm not a painter or carpenter I offered to help them and also work through the night doing various chores and just helping out wherever possible after I had finished my regular work. This morning @ 6AM in the morning after working 22hrs in a row everyone was completely exhausted and we all knew there was just too much remaining work and we wouldn't get it done. So in comes our employer and even tho he could clearly see we were all half asleep the stupid asshole asks if we could stay a few hours longer. What the hell does he think, that we're robots or something?! We were all very pissed of @ him for asking so we just left, we just couldn't go on anymore. I'm telling you, employers are all the same. It doesn't matter how hard you work, it's never enough

But that's not even the worst part. He told us the boats had to leave @ 8 o'clock this morning wich was a lie. They had to leave @ 12 o'clock in order to be in time for the HISWA

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
What happened to the working time directive ?

I love my employer but then again I own the company ;)

Jesus! Presumably - and not negating what you say - you will get paid overtime (3/4* normal rate??) ?

Having had the similar problem at my last job, and being a spokesperson for handicapped people at that company, I did a little research and found out that a large number, presumably the majority of lower and middle level managers handle their staff that way.

The saddest thing it is that it actually works and pays off for them if they push them to put out 150% of workpower. Of course, this will eventually lead to massive burnouts and to the more qualified workers who do have a choice as where to work to leave.

So when workers drop ot after, say, typically two or three years, maybe more when they do prescribed drugs or stuff like that, they have to get new workers and train them to the level the old ones functioned. That is a BIG cost, but companies do not look at those costs in relation to the drop-outs.

But as long as companies do not keep their books in a way that looks at all the different costs that get generated by this work policy, they will keep on doing that, because on those levels, there are a lot of people on a power trip who get forward by the surplus work their workers do without really getting paid fairly for their putting their families and their health on the line.

But hey, as long as people still vote for the political parties that allow such ways to treat their voters, this will go on.

I wasn't presuming to know what you want. I was make a generalized statement like the one you made about all companies. Guess I should have substituted the word "people" instead of "you" in my 1st post here.

I was a low level then mid-level manager for several years at resturants and I will say that this is how we work. Also I have to agree with the above post, I ALWAYS told my staff that family and school comes first. You can always get a job, but you won't always have a family. Even to this day I tell my boss that I really don;t care what he thinks I will ALWAYS put my family first above work anyday of the week.

I have to ask you only worked this "killer schedual for 5 days. Also since you were not a painter or caprenter, which are more then likely UNION and they get PAID HUGE money for working them hours. Apprentances in the boilermakers START at 23.50 per hour. And since your not a union employee you can't help them anyways.

So what I take from this is that
1. You hate working long hours, but help to get the job done, that makes sence
2. You hate your employer.

I changed my middle-name to Freeones
I don't get paid for overtime and routinely work 50+ hours a week. And I don't mind, I like my job :)

Speaking as a boss:

You're getting paid, aren't you? If you don't want to do the work, don't. You are replaceable. We'll just get someone else.
.

Now thats over, sounds like a pretty tough day/night of work you had, which I agree sucks. You just can't blame your employeer/boss. At the end of the day, he too is just trying to get a job done.

Thats what I always said to my employees, well not that nicely though.

I always say. "If you don't like it, there is the front door, don't let it hit you in the ass on the way out."

Another one I use from time to time. "this is not a democracy, It's a dictatorship and I am the dick".

The system is different in the Netherlands but I did help a lot. And I don't hate my employer but I hate he lied to us. It shows he has no respect for us.

In this case I can. The head carpenter told him 4 months ago to order material so he could get started on the boat because otherwise they wouldn't have enough time to get the job done. That didn't happen because management thought there was plenty of time and there was no rush so they didn't order any material until two months ago. If they had listened to the head carpenter the boat could've already been finished without rushing or compromising quality.. He warned them repeatedly but they didn't listen. It's like that with a lot of stuff. Some of my co-workers have been building boats for more then 25yrs so they know what they're talking about but management just don't listen.

Its real easy make promises to people and require all this extra bullshit, when you don't have to lift a fuckin finger.

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
I have been in similar situations just like this one, many a time Boothy. And let me tell you and everyone else, nothing else fires up an exhausted workforce and motivates them more, when a critical deadline is upon....than a giant, organized worker orgy:nanner:

When the going gets tough...the tough get cuming. That's what I always say.:glugglug::thumbsup:

funny...... NOT funny ! :uohs:

22 straight hours in Europe is like trying to pull a 30 - 32 in America so I can appreciate her frustration and I'm not being facetious.

'Babe, if this is something that happens every year and your employer doesn't give you a "heads up", they are either flaky, they don't have keen mgmt skills, or maybe they do have an angle in this to keep their payroll at a minimum, I haven't studied your labour laws & reqs over there.

You did mention that this was a boat show that you are in prep for .... one would think that, if anything, this is an event where a mfgrs products, presentation and punctuality would be under the highest level of scrutiny !
They should be on the ball ! Fuggin procrastinators !! huh ? :wave2:

There is always the "gumment" option for employ but those jobs just create more of a tax burden for everybody else....including government workers.

Vicious circle, 'Babe, vicious circle. :o

Look on the bright side, no working out this week :nanner:
Get:sleep:
