Draft Day

Look out you young libs. Charles Rangel(D)NY is introducing a bill that would basically bring back the draft.

Funny thing is that Gomer (or is he Herman Munster?) is in favor of it as well.

Charley wants rich kids to serve so their parents in Washington will think twice about sending the military into combat. Students would not be exempt:

I'm amazed Charley would think the draft would make such a difference... the rich and powerful are always able to find loopholes.

Yeah, the rich can BUY loopholes......and you may see a few Americans from this board in Canada if this passes, bigdan I would be seriously pissed off if I got drafted while I was in college...I would feel like I wasted a lot of my time and money but alas, the military won't take me.

Unfortunately... if it passes Im guaranteed to be sent... Im on year 7 of 8 and I got a call from my C/O the other day that they were activated and I might get orders. He is a nice guy... He said that its just a heads up so Im not too surprised.

But if they decide not to... and then this passes. They will definitly grab me before they draft someone.

All that I can say, is that I haven't seen an republicans stand up for it, only the dems. You Might want to rethink you vote.

If the democrats pass it, they will probably have some type of lottery like they did in '71.

I don't think anybody should start packing their bags just yet... in fact, I feel safe in saying that there's zero chance of this bill passing. Charley knows that; I now realize I should not have been "amazed" earlier. He's merely trying to make a point about the overrepresentation of minorities in the Armed Forces.... and it's a very valid point IMO.

Anyone who knows Charley knows he has a flair for the dramatic, and that's all this bill is. He's also does a great deal of work on minority issues, which makes perfect sense considering he himself is black and is the Congressman for Harlem, NY.

Yes, there's a Senate Resolution and a House Resolution (I forgot their numbers) starting the Selective Service back up that are being quietly pushed through both houses. There was something about how being enrolled in college or being an expatriate would no longer exempt one from the draft in this new bill. And it would affect American men and women up to age 35.

There's been some debate on how feasible a draft would be but given that the US army, both active duty and reserve/national guard, is stretched thin in Iraq, it's been discussed a lot.

I don't know about the draft back would be a good Idea,
but I do think that everybody that turns 18 should
spend at least one year in the Armed Forces. Just so everyone
knows what it's like. Just my 2 cents on that.
Even if it did come back there is still an Inactive Ready Reserve.
That is people like Goblin and Me that have spent our time and
are trained. My unit is there, but I couldn't go because of my anckle. I'm sure if it came down to where they are hurting for
bodies they will grab me so fast my head would spin. There
are thousands of these people just waiting for a phone saying
this is your luck day you get to go play in the sand. I would think
the Gov. would use up these people first before making someone
that doesn't already have the training. Far as the school kids I'm
sure it won't be for nothing there are thousand of Guard and Reserve that are in school. They have some ways of making it
work out so you can pick back up where you left off.
Goblin sorry to hear your a desk jockey J/k. For me it to the
front and don't collect 200 dollars on the way. I pray for this every
day.

It's not even a sure thing that there will be a draft (never happen) and even if there was I dont think anybody will know for sure until it happens. But dont worry because it wont happen!
