Dual Citizenship.

Anybody here know anything about having a dual citizenship? How to get one? How to check if you are eligible? Or could lead me to a website with this information? I googled it but the website I checked told me to contact the officials in the country in which I am seeking citizenship. Surely there is an easier way just to find out if I am eligible. No?:dunno:

Depends which country it is. I'm eligible to hold triple citizenship, though at the minute I'm only opting for two (well, one, the other is forced on me). I could apply for the third (Italian), and may do so eventually. Which country is it you're hoping to gain citzenship with?

The U.K.

My Grandmother was born in Northern Ireland, and I'm told that makes me eligible for England and Wales as well.

And the Republic, too. Anyone who can hold citzenship for Northern Ireland can claim for the Republic as well. You'd need to apply to the British Home Office. Citzenship for the UK works across all the 'home territories' or whatever they're called. I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and am considered a citizen of the whole UK (though, I really don't wanna be), and if you gain citzenship there you'll be the same.

I've always had dual citizenship, though I wouldn't know the first thing about how to apply for either one. flylicker

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.
I have dual citizenship as well. Membership has it's privileges.

Im over here in Korea right now and from what I understand, if you marry someone in the other country you can have dual citizenship, im not 100% sure.

This website has some good information though.

In case you were wondering the US is cool with dual citizenship and doesn't require you to renounce your other country, or revoke it's own for joining another. They don't exactly like it and you still have to swear an oath of allegiance to the nation above all others when becoming a new citizen, but they don't do anything about it, like I said.

Some countries don't accept it, even if the other one does, but I'm sure the Uk is fine.

Ps. Hissex, I heard that Korea doesn't accept dual citizenship and they will revoke yours if you try to get one elsewhere, but I'm not positive on that, didn't see the legal ruling, just heard about it.

The UK is fine, as a large proportion of its citizens - and elected officials - hold, or can hold, several other citizenships.

To cast ballot, elect or vote you mean ?

Forget it, you answered my query (above)

I love analyzing the minor differences in UK English and American English. :D

I think he's referring to the nation of Ireland aka. The Republic of Ireland aka. Southern Ireland, which is an autonomous region that borders the nation of Northern Ireland which is a member of the United Kingdom. Both of them inhabit the land mass that is collectively known as Ireland located adjacent to Great Britain on the northwestern coast of Europe.

Somehow, I can imagine the U.S. dropping this policy at some point in the future. I can more easily imagine it as a plank of the GOP platform!

well it didn't used to be that way but they changed it in a rare instance of rationality when they figured that it didn't really make any difference and it was just a waste of time to try and enact judicial proceedings in enforcing it.

But it would fit perfectly with the GOP's party line: Government doesn't work and if you elect us, we'll prove it.

Of course the democrats party line is: Let's do all the same things that the Republicans do, that way if it doesn't work we can blame it on them.

Duel citizenship depends on your home country and the country you're trying to apply for. America doesn't care if it's citizens are duel but a lot of other countries do, or don't allow it.

I believe for Ireland, if you're a direct Irish decendant, you can get an Irish passport. Contact the Irish consulate and they'll be able to help you...all I can say is if you're eligable and an US or Canadian citizen...DO IT. It will make moving through the EU a lot easier on you.

I can speak for the Netherlands as I'm going to be applying for my dutch passport next year. You can only be a duel citizen if you're married to a dutch person (or I assume a dutch person married to another country's citizen that allows duel citizenship). Otherwise, if you're an immigrant and wanting dutch citizenship you have to give up your nationality.

They don't, but you can live there and be (legally) treated as if you'd always lived there.
