A fucking excellent question. I want to hear some news about what is next. I think the US would be foolish to simply not have a space-travel vehicle ready to go.

EXACTLY! This is just like when they retired the SR-71. Why would they retire the FASTEST plane in the world, if they didn't already have one that was faster! In this case, the powers that be are either completely stupid and don't have a replacement, or they have a replacement which is probably more expensive and don't want to tell anyone until after the shuttles have been moth-balled.

Trust me, no matter what, you can find some idiot who will object. There are too many people who don't think about the future. The fact is, there will come a time when humanity has raped this planet of it's last resources and the only option will be to leave and find another planet.

Like locusts leaving to move onto another field of crops .... it'd be nice to think that when we do finally start to boldly go where no human has gone before, that we'll do so having reformed our ways, and with a spirit of of open-minded adventure; not desperate material profiteering and colonization....

Basically yes, but it will be a few years until they are built. In the near future support for the International space station will be with Russian rockets.

We were developing a replacement, gonna be a Rocket powered by the largest rocket we have ever devolped, but as far as I know the project was scrapped because of the fucking budget!

a Russian rocket.
