ex player or coach who was a lousy commentator

PJpenny

Piss off - I'm wanking
Which former player or coaches (any sport) made horrible analysts...can be tv or studio?

My list: Reggie Miller, Dion Sanders (these have to be the worst ever) Shannon Sharpe, Kevin McHale

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
My list: Reggie Miller

I'm sorry, but Reggie is fucking awesome. I love listening to him on commentary. Then again, he's also my favorite player of all-time.

Side note: #31 is the best clutch player in history. If I have one shot left to win a game, he gets the ball. No doubt about it.

Emmitt Smith is awful. Great running back. Horrible fucking commentator.

Icewater Jones

MasterBlaster
Trent Dilfer is a complete dick, as is Mark 'Holier than thou' Schlereth. Cris Collinsworth is useless. Tommy Heinson is one the all-time worst. I've never heard anyone as one-sided and ridiculous as him.

My overall list:

Trent Dilfer
Tommy Heinson
Michael Irvin
Mark Schlereth
Cris Collinswoth
Jamie Dukes
Steve Stone (hated more as a person)
Bill Walton
Magic Johnson
Joe Buck
Troy Aikman
Joe Morgan

A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.
Emmett Smith and Cris Collinsworth are what immediately sprung to mind for me, and I see they have both been mentioned already.

I also find Phil Simms to be pretty shitty. His "Phil-osophy" segments drive me crazy.

Failed the pratical, aced the theory
John Flaherty

He's doing the Yankees v. Brewers series solo with Michael Kay and it's such a snoozefest I've resorted to watching it on mute and listening to the cars drive by my house.

Cris Collinsworth

Word. The guy is fucking brutal.

Same goes for Tim McCarver. I remember a couple of years ago falling asleep in the middle of a game he was calling with Thom Brennaman (who is not his dad). I suddenly woke up, royally pissed, finding myself yelling "did McCarver just fucking SAY that??!!??" I've no idea what it was, but it was brutally dump (something along the lines of "In order to hit a fast ball, you bat has to match the speed of the ball, and meet the ball".).

Locally, Jeff "The Cowboy" Brantly is brutal for the Cincinnati Reds.

I remember watching a game that Lou Piniella called shortly before becoming manager of the Cubs. He was freaking awful. He sounded like a third grader reading off a script his sister from the fifth grade wrote.

FreeOnes makes me moist!
Not a fan of the Troy Aikman/Joe Buck commentary, I hate Joe Theisman and that whole ESPN crew, Steve Young sucks, I hate Deion Sanders and Shannon Sharpe on the NFL network, I didn't like Dan Marino on CBS at first but I think he's pretty great now, I also don't like Bill Cowher on CBS. I like Jimmy Johnson, but I don't think he has chemistry with the rest of the Fox crew, he doesn't fit in well and isn't an egghead like Howie and Terry, who are great, but are idiots sometimes haha.

Wouldn't it be an easier discussion to ask "ex-player or coach who WASN'T a lousy commentator"? :dunno: Just sayin'!!!!!

D-rock

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
Joe Morgan - How a person that was so savvy and some would say smart on the field cold be so stupid when it comes to analysis is sad.

Phil Sims - I think people get dumber listening to him he is so terrible.

Joe Theismann - See Phil Sims, but even a lot worse.

I don't think he has been involved in the playing of a professional sport but Joe Buck gets mentioned here also. He is so bad he has dragged the once somewhat decent Aikman down just being around him.

The list of the others that are just bad is too numerous for me to want to list them. Some of the others are really REALLY bad also, but in lot of those cases nobody expects them to be good or they are there just for mindless color commentary (not that it's a good thing) and at least everybody knows it.
