Explosion kills 23 at Moscow airport

MOSCOW – The Russian state RIA Novosti news agency says an explosion at Moscow's busiest airport has killed 23 people and wounded 130.

The news report cites the Health Ministry.

RIA Novosti says Monday's explosion in the arrivals hall at Domodedovo Airport may have been caused by a suicide bomber.

MOSCOW (AP) — An explosion shook the busiest airport in the Russian capital on Monday afternoon and an aviation official said an unspecified number of people were killed.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the explosion in the international baggage-claim area at Domodedovo airport.

Russia's Investigative Committee said there were at least 20 casualties in the blast and the state news agency RIA Novosti quoted a spokesman for the Russian aviation agency, Sergei Izvolsky, as saying there were dead among the casualties.

This situation is a bit trickier. Although still islamic extremists they aim to force Russia to give up the likes of Chechnya and Ingushetia so this is very much an internal Russian problem. The threat faced by the US is from Al-Qaeda and affiliated groups which are more international and strike targets around the world, they would require an international effort as terrorists are of many nationalities and strike in many countries. The Chechen seperatists will all be pretty much from the same region and will be unlikely to have any connection with Al-Qaeda or a small one at the most. Just like you wouldn't expect the Russians to help the USA fight the drug cartels in Mexico the Russians will prefer to deal with this alone and I'm sure the US won't want to take on the Chechens as well.

The Chechens have a history of eating turbine powered tanks... the usa would be better not taking M1 there. In fact this guy could well have cut his teeth fighting against americans in the middle east. Chechen fighters did travel down to the mid-east to combat american forces when they were "attacking Moslem lands", it's not inconcievable that some from the mid-east could have travelled North to attack the Russkis.

While Domodedovo was a bit of a shithole of an airport and the opportunity for refurbishment is good, I feel sorry for all the dead Russkis.
And knowing the strength of Russki security, I'm surprised anybody managed to mount a successfull terrorist attack on 'em.
