French parliament to consider burka ban

"The problem of the burka is not a religious problem. This is an issue of a woman's freedom and dignity. This is not a religious symbol. It is a sign of subservience; it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burka is not welcome in France," Sarkozy told lawmakers.

This is the kind of Frog perspective I actually appreciate. I've seen driver's licenses in which the subject is wearing a buka. I saw a woman taking a driving exam in a burka and the first thought that sprang up was, "wherever she looks is one giant blind spot. How would someone pass the test this way?"

In 2004, the French parliament passed legislation banning Muslim girls from wearing headscarves in state schools, prompting widespread Muslim protests. The law also banned other conspicuous religious symbols including Sikh turbans, large Christian crucifixes and Jewish skull caps.

At least they're equal opportunity in their approach. I don't go around wearing a large cross on a chain or anything but I could see this as religious persecution no matter what brand of religion you happen to buy into.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
"Frogs"???

Yeah those doggone frogs! Remind me a lot of the limeys, micks, krauts, dagos, gooks and spics (just quoting Walt Kowalski here mods so PLEASE don't ban me). They need to make those camel-jockeys conform to proper French society.

O,ne on the main principle in France is what we call "laïcité", the fact that all religious concerns are banned from government affairs and government do not involve itself in religious affairs.

This is why the hidjab (religious headscarves weared by some muslim women) is banned from public schools but also to every single person working for the government or any other institution.

Actually the "camel jockey" is an inappropriate phrase, and bordering on a little racist, they dont all ride camels you know, some drive cars, motorbikes, ride horses. It would be like calling all americans gun totting rednecks.

If I had a my Freeones account, I would have just gotten 25 points!
I am given to understand (but have no first hand knowledge) that the wearing of the burka is not a part of Islam but a later development.

Roll a d6.
It is about time to face this issue and once for all, it is either French way or no way (go back to Algeria)

Burka encourages segregration and disintegration of the society.

Burka allows the brutal supression of women's right !

Hey man relax, I understand where he was coming from. I just wanted to clarify what it was he said.

I disagree there, while in certain circumstances it can and does, I think what you will find is where integration is necessary it does happen. Suppression of the women's rights....not really its the woman's choice at the end of the day if she chooses to wear it. Contrary to what you might think not all French muslims are Algerian sizeable portion are about 1.5M out of about 4.1M, due to it being a former colony of the French.

I am given to understand (but have no first hand knowledge) that the wearing of the burka is not a part of Islam but a later development.

Burka is not an absolute requirement, head scarf also is not an absolute requirement, but is encouraged, quite often worn in conservative places by choice of the women wearing them.

If a woman is wearing a Burka through a free choice then she should be allowed to do so, as should anyone who wears an item of clothing/symbol of their own faith.

Yep I agree judging from your location your from UK like myself right?

In the UK I think we live in a more tolerant society than what France is at the moment, and arguably enjoy more civil liberties than in France.

In principle, it seems reasonable to restrict religious clothing to in the home or at the place of worship.

France is a Western nation. Western women have different clothing expectations. In most Islamic nations, women are required to wear some form of covering. A French chick wearing lowrider jeans and a tank top probably wouldn't go over well on the streets in the Middle East.

The burka and the Nuns' habit and dress seem very similar, don't they?

Whth what is going on in Iran, this is realy f-ing stupid. for France/Sarcozy to be doing this.

This give the rulers in Iran a chance to say, "see the west wants to destroy Islam, therefore anyone who wants to modernize/westernize Iran is ani-Islam."

Paris Hilton was in Dubai and even the stupid slut Paris Hilton showed everything in her home-make movie covered up well in Dubai.

So if the Muslim wants to live in France, they better "dress down" and follow the French culture.

i hope one day all countries will adopt this approach. government is for the people, not for the self-declared messengers of an alleged god.
