The cost of a barrel of crude oil has over doubled from $46.34 in Jan 2009 to $96.42 today, so a doubling in the price of gasoline is to be expected. The president of the USA has no control over oil prices. (Source – NYSE http://www.nyse.tv/crude-oil-price-history.htm)

woodwork6:
They went up when Bush was president too, but the big difference is that Bush did something about it and brought all the CEO's in from all the major oil companies and held a congressional hearing. Shortly after that, the prices started dropping again. Bush also tried to open up the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil exploration and the environmental wackos in Congress shot him down.
All Obama does is fly around the country to universities and colleges and give campaign speeches to brain washed kids.

The President held a Congressional hearing with the oil CEOs?

Oh, yeah...in 2003, a gallon of gas cost 1.35. In mid-2008, it was 4.11. For retards such as Will and Sam who are incapable of doing basic math, that is triple the price.

Doesn't that mean that the price went higher under GWB than it is now under Obama at 3.847 (Source http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/)?

To answer myself - Yes, it does.
The reason for this - the price of oil. ($140 a barrel in mid 2008)
The USA does not control the price of oil - OPEC does, and the oil companies like to use oil price rises to raise the gas price at the pump. They are not so quick to lower the price again when the oil price drops. This has nothing to do with the USA - it happens (and is happening) worldwide. The ONLY thing that the government can do to lower fuel prices is to cut taxes on it, which is a great idea, but as the country is so far in debt it cannot afford to cut taxes on fuel, because if it did, it would need to raise taxes elsewhere.
You in the USA are lucky - you do not get taxed anywhere near the amount that we in Europe do.
Here, in the UK where petrol is around £1.36 ($8.36/US Gallon), the duty on 1 US gallon is about £2.20 or about $3.56. On top of that there is VAT @20% which would be about 84p or $1.36 making $4.92 out of the price of a gallon Tax and Duty. The actual cost of the raw fuel is $2.95/US Gallon.
Bottom line - if OPEC raises the price of a barrel of oil, the gasoline price will rise, and no American president of any party can do a damn thing about it.

as long as the fed keeps printing paper, gas prices will continue their long term price rise no matter who is president

First of all, the price of gas was waaay higher than a buck eighty-five before the election/inauguration. One could argue that not having a Republican get sworn in was a contributing factor to the drop.

During the Repub Primary debates, it was a commonly accepted fact to all except Gingrich that the President does not control the price of gas.

Will, just because I give you more credit than you deserve, you still have to earn some at some point. You lose serious points for this one.

To be fair...in the history of energy consumption, only one cause has prompted energy usage to go down:

Higher prices.

Not efficiency, better technology, etc (every advance in energy efficiency/savings/etc has been met with an increase in demand to make it a zero-sum gain). Higher prices.

Therefore: high gas prices are good for the environment. :cthulhu:

That and exporting too much oil.

More oil refineries need to be built.

No one cares about the environment.

Those "green" jobs never worked and never will.

For the second time, can you explain to me how the president controls gas prices?

Don't worry, he won't answer. He's not capable of composing a paragraph. He's only able to:
a. copy and paste
b. use one or two line responses with lots of smileys
c. feel smug and superior, because he's stupid enough to believe he's right.

I don't know who is to blame but the facts remain that the USA and Canada have pleanty of oil. If the USA dug more for it and built refineries to process it then OPEC would not control the oil prices. Competition would drop them. We could have a price war going on if we were able to flood the market with cheap oil drilled and refined right here.
