The Civil War in Lincoln's views was a war to preserve the union, not about slavery.

Lincoln's views on slavery was for no more expansion in the new territories. For the South, he felt they could keep their slaves and that slavery would die off as technology took over in the future.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a political move vs the South because how long the war was going.
