I ran out of lube. Can I borrow yours?
I wish I had the capability my friend, all I have is a laptop at the moment. He left me a complete album of his squadron through the war's progression, there are some simply amazing shots in there. I'll try to scan a bunch at my dad's and figure out how to get them here. Or you could PM me your email and I'll pass a bunch along. Little project for the weekend. :glugglug:

If I had a my Freeones account, I would have just gotten 25 points!
My grandfather was in the RCAF 410 Squadron, I've got a great shot of his squadron all lined up in front of a mossie at the end of the war. He left me even his training manuals and so many pictures as one of the groundcrew - he loaded the 20mm Hispano cannons and fit the various bombs. My molst prized pics are of a prisoner-of-war facility they bombed with precision to enable POWs to escape

That is great. You are really lucky. Here, towards the end of the war the Nazis and after the war the US confiscated almost every picture they could get their hands on. My grandfather was able to hide some of his pictures (including some from Stalingrad) and my fiancées grandfather hid some of his pictures, too, including one that shows the bombing of allied navy. But it's only a handful of pictures. It's a shame really...

Red Spyder

Yes, I bribed and cheated to get this far
From that list, the P-51, for its range, agility, and even a few mustang pilots shot down German jet figthers.

Never argue with a fool. People might not know the difference.
Spitfire.

I should buy stock in Kleenex
its a hard choice between the spitfire and p-51 if it was not for the spitfire the battle of britain could have gone another way and who knows what the outcome of ww2 would have been if it had

the p-51 gave us the ability for fighters to stay with bombers all the way to Germany and back because of its range

but I would say the spitfire because I think without in the battle of britain the war could have been lost then

the Messerschmidt Me 262 would have been up there if Germany could build more of them than they did because they never could it was not really a war changing plane

but its close run thing

The question you have to ask is this: Which plane survived/knocked down the most enemies?

Legzman

OMG
The debate continues!
Military historians have voted the P51 Mustang the greatest fighter "OF ALL TIME"... much less WWII

Do you have a source for this? I was actually thinking about starting a thread about that exact subject.

I changed my middle-name to Freeones
It really depends on if you are talking early or late in the war. Early, you've gotta go with the ME 109, the tip of the Blitzkrieg spear. Late, the P-51 was very influential as already mentioned. The Hellcat was probably the most capable fighter of the war, but by the time it went into service, it was pretty much over.

You have to give it to the Hellcat it had a very powerful engine and had outstanding protection:thumbsup:

You'll enjoy this then. The Canadians were allowed pretty much anything home except certain weapons - my grandfather brought home an 1878 St. Etienne revolver(still have it) that he got for some cigarettes from a French resistance member after the war.

But on the way home, while boarding the boat, he was forced to hand over the MP40 submachine gun in his possession. When my grandfather told me this story at the age of 9 years, I went ballistic with WOW!!!!! and I've often imagined him getting that gun back home for me to worship as I did with his two pistols(2nd being a Colt .38 Automatic long barrel 1908 - still got it).

Every time I look at the pics I'm swelled with pride and love for he and his Great Generation that made our lives the lucky existence they are.

Cheers:tongue:

Royal Canadian Air Force 410 forever!
