I'm not saying it is not sinister, but we are talking about an entirely different time, government and world culture .....and Colby was perhaps the most independent CIA head to have held the position: he made a point of distancing himself from the Whitehouse and was fastidious in his reporting to Congress. His frankness and unwillingness to bow to the politico actually cost him his job, so he's a very bad example of a 'sinister intelligence overseer secretly controlling the media', because he simply wasn't.

Honestly, I don't know why Charlie's making rounds with the media when he's claiming not to give a fuck. Bit of an oxymoron. We get it, you're living an atypical lifestyle and you're "out there".
