She's a Dame in this country and she criticises BP and says she is glad England (calling them Britain) didn't beat the USA. I know she wants to appease her American fans but this is just ridiculous, almost as much as her explanation of the origins of Football (Soccer). Someone's starting to go senile me thinks

I also don't agree with simple minded patriotism but she slams BP without making any sort of informed point (simply jumping on the bandwagon) and if she said football didn't interest her at all then fair enough but to seem to have an interest in football and not support your nation in a WORLD CUP and then give no reason why she preferred the USA is just stupid and sounds like she was just sucking up to the audience and trying to avoid saying anything that might not mix well with Letterman or his audience.

Why is it unpatriotic to criticize BP? It has become increasingly clear that they cut corners at pretty every phase of construction and maintenance. Plenty of Americans (as they should) criticize Halliburton and co. all the time.

As for England vs USA, I sort of agree -- though I will say there are plenty who think paying a salary as high as England's coach receives (close to 20x what the US coach gets) is absurd in this day and age. I don't know that having a poor WC performance will change any of that, however.

As I said before her criticism is more of an insult ('bloody p***-poor') rather than an informed opinion for a lady of her age and standing. There is a lot of people over here that think the whole incident was just a tragic accident and that Obama is just throwing BP to the wolves, I'm pretty sure all these big multinationals cut corners in search of bigger profits for their shareholders but this incident caught BP out and they should rightfully face the consequences.

I used to watch it on on Sky 1 when they showed it about a decade ago but these sort of 'takshows' are not really popular with British TV viewers whilst you have lots with the likes of Letterman, Leno and O'Brien etc.

Maybe she could have said something about the Bhopal disaster of 1989 which killed possibly tens of thousands, an event for which American chief executives jumped bail on prosecution for culpable homicide, and remain fugitives, despite recent extradition requests.

Maybe she could have said something about the way Occidental Petroleum shimmied out of taking any responsibility for Piper Alpha in the North Sea in 1988.

Or perhaps she could have said something about the devastation American and European oil companies have wreaked in places like the Niger Delta for decades.

Until she does that, I'll be less inclined to take her comments as thoughtful and balanced, and more about playing to the seething, table-thumping hordes on the other side of the pond right now. And in that I include that almighty cunt, Barack Obama.

If that's a reply to me, I'm not taking her in particular seriously, because she's a celebrity. I'm saying that while I can entirely comprehend why people in Louisiana may be absorbed by the big problems washing up on their own shores, those of us further abroad should cast our eyes further afield too.

Americans are understandably demanding compensation for the irresponsible actions of BP and others, but are ignoring the fact that lots of companies are behaving like this all the time, often with the protection and blessings of the American government.

If Obama wants BP to deal with the mess it's made, he should apply the same standard to the American petroleum and gas companies that have caused similar disasters across the globe.
