Helen Mirren unpatriotic on Letterman

If that's a reply to me, I'm not taking her in particular seriously, because she's a celebrity. I'm saying that while I can entirely comprehend why people in Louisiana may be absorbed by the big problems washing up on their own shores, those of us further abroad should cast our eyes further afield too.

Americans are understandably demanding compensation for the irresponsible actions of BP and others, but are ignoring the fact that lots of companies are behaving like this all the time, often with the protection and blessings of the American government.

If Obama wants BP to deal with the mess it's made, he should apply the same standard to the American petroleum and gas companies that have caused similar disasters across the globe.

I'm not one to bash BP. The rig was a disaster waiting to happen and as with all things machine, there was a failure.
Hating BP as so many are doing makes them feel better, helps them not feel so helpless in the face of an ongoing accident.
Putting BP out of business is a huge mistake, as there are so many employees and their families and pensions that hang in the balance.

I'm so great I'm jelous of myself.
i don't know why mirren was so surprised bp was just doing what all companies do...getting away with everything they could to increase their profits and then it bit them in the ass

You guys need to take a deep breath and relax.

Man they were just chatting a bit and for christ's sake, do not blow this out of proportion.

Maybe she could have said something about the Bhopal disaster of 1989 which killed possibly tens of thousands, an event for which American chief executives jumped bail on prosecution for culpable homicide, and remain fugitives, despite recent extradition requests.

Maybe she could have said something about the way Occidental Petroleum shimmied out of taking any responsibility for Piper Alpha in the North Sea in 1988.

Or perhaps she could have said something about the devastation American and European oil companies have wreaked in places like the Niger Delta for decades.

Until she does that, I'll be less inclined to take her comments as thoughtful and balanced, and more about playing to the seething, table-thumping hordes on the other side of the pond right now. And in that I include that almighty cunt, Barack Obama.

Yes, that would be very timely.

So, criticism of a gigantic oil company now equates with being unpatriotic? When did this shift occur?

What's most humorous is that, besides the board members who could give a flying fuck about the people of the UK, the employee base of BP is as distributed globally as any other oil company. The US holds almost as many shares as the UK (39% to 40%). Hence, Brits taking attacks on BP personally makes very little sense, unless they are particularly invested in defending the honour of CEO Hayward and chairman Svanberg (who is Swedish, I believe).

But that's the point, BP is not a solely UK owned company so her comments are fucking stoopid & ill-informed.
She says "Because you know if Britain had beaten America, what with BP, which to my mind stands for bloody p***-poor . . .I mean I don't think I could have come on this show. I would have been so embarrassed and mortified at being British that I think I would have had to cancel."
What an idiotic dumb thing to say, as well as pandering to the yanks. & she refers to the England team as Britain!
SILLY COW! I have lost all respect for her. Why be embarrassed about being British?!?

PS - these American talk shows are shite. Pure fluff, pandering to the guest etc. Pointless shit.

Absolutely. But that doesn't change the bizarre and seemingly concerted effort of the Guardian, Times, and Daily to immediately rush to the field to defend BP against any and all criticism. Something tells me Rusbridger and co. had more than a few shares in BP, and were quite sour to see them go kaput.

I think what upsets people over here is not that BP is being criticised but the sheer hypocrasy shown by America concerning pollution their companies/citizens are reponsible for, this was from Question Time (UK) last night, fair enough she is right wing (Daily Mail) but at least she backs up her opinions with some informed points unlike Helen Mirren who is just pandering to the audience.

to be honest ulysses, i don't know anyone personally over here who's blaming Britons for the oil spill. i do see a lot of people blaming a company for it, just as they did when Exxon fucked up.

when finding fault with a company, to blame all the citizens of that companies origin is rather silly. but that's where the media and govt likes to play cos it rallies the short tempered for votes and sells commercials.

Helen what a Whorish Tit you turned out to be.
Her rant seems perfect to endear herself to the Americans.Theres nothing wrong in calling a brick, a brick...but to play to the gallery and earn shameless brownie points over it is whorish.

And I find this whole Moral high ground picked up by Americans a little hypocritical.
On one hand they have ardently defended and protected Warren Anderson and Union Carbide who were responsible for the deaths of 20,000 Indians and COUNTING... and on another hand they are all out gonzo against BP.
I read in the papers the other day and the average compensation awarded to a single Bhopal victim is 200 $.Hows that for getting infinite diseases and complications. All the while Anderson and Union Carbide/Dow Chemicals are untouched and still protected.

Wait a minute. Americans ardently defended and protected Union Carbide after Bhopal? When did we do this?

Who did what, where, why, who and how now?
I've never heard of any of that shit at all.

20,000 Indians? Is this form the 17 century or do you mean the other Indians?

I was just about to ask the same thing. It's news to me if we did. At best some people in positions of power in government or business did. I never heard about the American people in general defending them.

A huge chunk of Americans are some of the biggest criticizers when it comes to companies in the US doing something wrong.
