While I agree with you on related issues such as people who will never be able to take care of themselves, let alone contribute to society.. these girls are fully functional albeit noone could've known that when they were born and the outlook was grim if you research conjoined twins.

..ahem, to resume.. While I hold some part of your post in agreement.. I find the majority of it to be contrary to the everyday happenings in first world countries where peoples lives can be prolonged indefinitely no matter the illness or deformation. Yet people recoil in shock at how natural things are unnatural, or how abortion.. cloning.. research..religion.. is unnatural/wrong.

These are two different scenarios. Hawking was already brilliant. Yes they say that ALS increased his spatial awareness and his ability to visualize equations in his head, but it's very possible that he would have figured out all of this anyway. I can agree with you when it comes to people with peculiar neuro-cognitive abnormalities like high functioning autism and aspergers, but other than that fetuses that are predicted to have severe impairments should be terminated. Scientists can actually detect certain forms of retardation during pregnancy already and if you look at the statistics, the overwhelming majority of couples decide to abort the pregnancy.
