Highway 50 "shoe tree" chopped down by heathens

U.S. Highway 50, billed as the “Loneliest Road in America,” lost one of its landmarks last week because of vandals.

The 70-foot cottonwood tree known as the “Shoe Tree” one mile east of Middlegate was cut down sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

“There are a lot of angry people,” said Middlegate bartender Travis Anderton describing the reaction from his customers. “That (the tree) helps out business. People come out to see the Shoe Tree.”

Anderton said on Monday he is as upset as those who have posted their comments on his grandmother's Facebook site.

“Somebody did this in the middle of the night,” said the 25-year-old Anderton.

He first learned of the incident when several customers stopped at the Middlegate Bar and Restaurant and told him about. Anderton said one patron told him the cut was fresh.

“Sawdust was over the snow,” Anderton said of the man's story. “But I am curious why someone wants to do that.”

Anderton's grandmother is planning a memorial at the site of the tree on Feb. 13 from 2:30-5:30 p.m.

Rick Gray, executive director of the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, is another person who is outraged.

“It was a quirky landmark on the Loneliest Road in America,” he said.

When people toured the area, Gray said visitors would marvel at the number of shoes tossed onto the limbs. Like a Christmas tree with its ornaments, the Shoe Tree had hundreds of sneakers, baby shoes, high heels and boots dangling from the many limbs.

The Churchill County Sheriff's Office took a report on the incident, but District attorney Art Mallory said he has not seen the report as of Monday.

“This is a historic landmark, and it has a lot of meaning and tradition for people,” he said.

When Mallory and his wife first visited Nevada, he said they drove across the state on U.S. Highway 50 and stopped to see the tree.

If people have any information on the incident, they may call the CCSO at 423-3116.

When they find whoever did this they should just take a fire axe and chop up parts of their house starting with the front door and punish them accordingly. No sense in this crap.

People are becoming more and more uncouthful as the years pass by.

Actually, heathen is another term for pagan. Pagan's were known to revere nature, therefore would not be inclined to chop down said tree. I think hooligans is more fitting.

Bastards.

Although, I see a lot of these springing up all over the place. I know it wouldn't be the same, but if you started a new one and made a facebook page asking people to stop by and fill it, it would probably only take a few months...

Oh I know what it means. It is frivolous destructive behavior and thus the act of a heathen. It is synonymous with savage, barbaric, and uncivil. It felt like the right word to use at the time. :)

If they were heathens they would be more likely to set up a shrine of human body parts at the base of the tree. The people who chopped down the tree were probably some kids who did it on a dare or something.

That's funny, because no one get upset over the cutting down of how many trees just for fucking Christmas!

They can grow the trees, we need the trees, then they cut them down, and more than 60% of them go unsold! I despise Christmas tree lots with a passion! I don't give a flying fuck if it's for a charity, they should be done away with. I even chastised my former in-laws for having a real tree one year.

You want to grow a tree, in a pot, bring it in once a year, then move it back outside, fantastic! I applaud you. You want the smell of a pine tree in your front room, get a air-freshener!

Heathens? :1orglaugh

I use it (incorrectly, of course) all the time to describe disrespectful people, like shoppers who pick up a product, decide they don't want it, and while still standing in front of the place where they got it will set it down on another shelf.

Assholes.

The difference between that and this is that what these people did was out of disrespect and stupidity. A Christmas tree is grown in a controlled environment for such purpose. Just as there are tree fields for the same purpose so people can either buy a tree to have planted in a yard that is already grown or start with a brand new tree that are skinny.

Trees that are used for commercial use are in controlled environments for just that.

This tree was considered a historic landmark and callously chopped down for no reason other than the people who were involved are degenerate assholes.

What about those 100 year old trees that are cut down for some mall on Christmas?

Do the same to them when they are caught. A chainsaw at about knee level should do it.
