***hijacked start page warning***

James Bonk

I should buy stock in Kleenex
Just a friendly warning .....
I have had the misfortune to have the start page of my browser hijacked( IE6).
I have 'adaware 6' installed and updated, but this failed to find the cause.
I used 'Hijack this' to scan for the cause, which turned out to be a file 'cebkme.dll' which had somehow got into my system folder.
I deleted this file and several other entries which contained a reference to this file.
Strangely, I did a search on google and found not one single result for 'cebkme.dll' .....

Also watch out for something called 'load.exe' which can try to access the internet from your temporary internet files folder ( use zone alarm to prevent this )

these never work, I tried the same thing about a virus I got from a link on Freeones, no one took it into consideration. What makes you think they will do the same with this one?

Nothing in life is free, except FreeOnes!
Startpage hijackers seem to be pretty popular these days. I had quite a nasty one some time ago and neither Adaware, nor Search&Destroy or Norton was able to find/delete it.
The reason is, that the actual file/registry entry is sometimes produced via a .vbe script that´s running automatically each time you start your machine. search for .vbe in your Windows folder and google for any results. Eventually you´ll find the file and can delete it.
Also, get TweakUI or something similar and set your startpage to no-change. Thius won´t protect you from the .vbe script thingy, but at least it prevents you from the light version, i.e. sites that just change your startpage once.

...oh.. and don´t use IE. ;)

hmm, i haven't had this happen to me in a really long time. all i can say is under no circumstances, even if you have to shut down IE to keep from doing so, don't ever say yes to a yes/no prompt.

i use avant :D ...which, yeah, runs off of IE.

Man, my computer got raped the other day by something I'd rather not know about. AVG keeps on finding Trojans and I've got an infected .dll file called bridge.dll in my system32 folder. Adaware keeps on stalling halfway through scanning my drive so I'm getting pretty pissed.

Anybody know what folder are the ones that need to be scanned by Adaware? Because I know for a fact that I don't need it to scan my whole C:/.
