Bexar County probation officer
Karla Escobar is currently under investigation by her department
because of explicit photos of herself she has featured on a pornographic
website. So far, Escobar
has been put on administrative leave as the department decides whether or not to fire her. Except
she’s also on maternity leave, so we’re not sure that amounts to much at the time being. The debate
on whether or not to fire her is being painted as an “ethical issue,” according to Director William Fitzgerald:
“We have policies and I did check that out, regarding anything pornographic. But it’s for employees that
are [currently] onboard here. I think it’s along the lines of anything unethical or immoral.”
Escobar has reportedly tried to have her pictures removed from the site, but, as she no longer has
rights to the images, they’ve stayed up. Which is exactly why we never ended up becoming a Suicide Girl
when we were jobless post-college.
Escobar evidently told her bosses about the
website when she was initially hired although they apparently
did not see it fit to act on the news until recently. It’s interesting that the head of the department seems to
be hearing this bit of news for the first time.
Do ethics really matter when it comes to the workplace, though? As long as someone is a good worker, as
Escobar’s superiors have admitted her to be, and gets their job done efficiently, why is there a need to assign
moral or ethical values to what they elect to do outside of work or before taking on a job? Or are employees
obligated to be representatives of their work positions at all times?
