Because the Americans had already laid claim to it. The whole point of getting there wasn't so we could do shit on it, it was just a race between the US and the USSR for space superiority. Once the US got there they claimed superiority. I'm sure if the USSR had stuck around for a while longer we would still be trying to outdo each other.

Why bother going back there? It was basically a stunt, a test, so man could say "Look what we can do".

Because they were the first ones to got a satellite & a man into space.

Besides, they did go to the moon, but by then it wasn't very impressive anymore.

Then the Russians focussed on Venus, while the Americans focussed on Mars. The Russians got to Venus first, but since the environment there isd less than hospitable, you could say they made the wrong choice.

Also keep in mind that the mars lander (I forgot it's name) was partly made with Russian technology.

There was a Russian - I forget - his name, I put it on the other thread - who devised a way in 1916 for a craft to land on the moon.
NASA eventually got round to using that approach.
