How do you define a "porn star"?

Seems that there are a lot of different definitions out there as to what type of woman is a "porn star".

For some, any woman who takes her clothes off fits this label. I don't see it that way. I wouldn't label Jelena, Aria, or Veronika as "porn stars". Perhaps, "models" or "centerfolds".

To me, a genuine porn star is a woman who:

1. Engages in real (not simulated) sexual activity, which is captured on film, including oral sex or intercourse, with either a man or woman

2. Is paid by a major distributor of such videos, such as Vivid, to appear on film, strip clubs, or in magazines to promote that distributor

There seem to be more and more models who are doing photo shoots with dildos and fingering themselves, but that's not really "hardcore". On the other hand, it's quite the big deal these days when a model "crosses the line" and starts doing actual intercourse.

It's that rare model who is able to push the envelope, but not quite go all the way. Those are the models that I find sexiest...some women are so beautiful that you really don't want to see them "cross over".

A non-nuder and nude models are not "porn stars" IMO.

Another grave misnomer/misunderstanding is that some people think that by BEING IN a porn flick or magazine (or 50) that they are a porn "star." Not at all the case. We have someone here (a few, really) on the board who has been in a number of adult "films," and she calls herself a "porn star," but she couldn't land a mag cover to save her life. Not star material at all.

"Being in" and "starring in" are two completely different things... Anyone can get naked and fuck on film (video or stills). NOT everyone can move thousands or HUNDREDS of thousands of units, however...

Porn is not merely nudity IMO. If someone just takes their clothes off and never performs sex acts with other people they're just a nude model, not a porn performer.

I think you're pretty much on the money. At least that's how I've always viewed them.
