This is a Question for guys! Now be honest here. Lets say you're driving whatever car you are now... and someone gave you a brand new & totally DIFFERENT car, for example a Bugatti Veyron. How many hours, or days would it take you to become familiar with driving the car - handling, braking, steering etc? 10 minutes, hours, or days, or weeeks??

I'm too lazy to set a usertitle.
If it's a car with similar ergonomics, then imediately or just a few minutes. I'm a tall guy that likes sports cars, if I can fit in them. I'm also comfortable with most Japanese ergonomics and mechanical design. I've never really been comfortable in an American car and I owned a TransAm. The cars are in theory, bigger and more roomy but nothing hits my in the right spot, and the controls are placed wrong. Also the US doesn't do two door hatchbacks, my preference (Nissan Z, CRX, RX7, Supra, etc) I can't fit in most Italian cars (leg room) but there's plenty of room in German cars. British cars are hit and miss, weirdest was driving a friend's right hand drive Mini Cooper around the block, (I can't imagine driving it safely on the left side in busy British traffic.)

Why is this question just for guys...be careful of your answer. I have my finger over the ban button. :angels:

But, to answer the question, it usually takes only hours for a standard vehicle.

It's actually a pretty complicated question. But yeah, it depends. Anyone who can drive a car can probably jump into a generic car and be off and running in a few minutes (think rental car at the airport). But once you start talking about something exotic (a Veyron?!) or a race car, it gets complicated, because you're now talking about something that just to start it probably requires some indepth knowledge of the vehicle.

I (like to) think that I know a fair amount about cars. But I've sat in race cars that belonged to friends, and until they walked me through the switches, I had NO idea how to even fire them up. "Ah, so this is one of those cars where the fuel pump has to be running before it will start, huh?" Michael Schumacher I am not.

Thanks! Well it's because boyfriend.. I want to get him a car which is radically different than the one he's driving atm. But I don't want him to spend all his attention on it! :D

Thanks for your well thought answer! Actually the Veyron was a bad example because I didn't mean 'race cars/on the track'.. it was the first one that popped in my mind which I thought a lot of guys like. I had intended to say production cars - eg someone jumping from a Toyota Camry V6 to a BMW 535i for example. That's what I was getting at.

Your boyfriend drives a Camry now and you're thinking about buying him a BMW 5 series? Hmm... :elaugh:

*sits up straight, slicks back hair and hikes up pants* Ya know... although I currently have a girlfriend... uh... :shy:

P.S. The navigation systems and the switch locations would probably be the biggest differences between those two cars.

Yes, I suppose the navigation and other gadgets in the new car would require more tinkering than the actual driving! Camry to BMW isn't that much of a big jump as both are automatic, I think. Have to check, though. :1orglaugh

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
I live in Cambridge, one of thUKs 11 cycling cities.
Good excercise.
Environmentally friendly.
No expensive breakdowns.
Breakdowns very easy to fix yourself.
No fuel costs.
No road tax.
No congestion charge.
Enjoyable.
No traffic jams.
Massively reduced ris of and cost of theft.
There are more benefits too, but I believe my points been made.

The actual driving will most likely only take a few stoplights for braking, a curve or two for steering, etc. Feeling comfortable in traffic such as blind spots caused by pillars or the size and height of the rear window is where I personally had issues if the car/truck are the same size.:2 cents:

You should get him A Koenigsegg CCX or CCXR, although it costs quite a lot.

If you can make a backwards figure-eight in the car, you're good to go. If you can't, you suck and get off the road, stay off the road. You'll never know where all four tires are on the road at all times.

Yes, I bribed and cheated to get this far
In my experience, I noticed some time to adjust when I went from a 4 cylinder 105 hp compact car to a 6 cylinder 250 hp sporty car. For a couple of weeks I'd press a little too hard on the accelerator when going from stop to go like I used to do with my older car and then I'd be screeching the tires, but other than that, I didn't have any other problems.
