How many of you guys use CoinStar Machines?

Bit of an odd thread.....Hardly a rip off, you take your coins, they are counted, turned into cash and done for a convenient percentage.

Hardly a rip off. Wheres the money for the manufacturer if they give you back 100% of your money?

Why not just roll your coins and take them to your bank to be exchanged for cash?

Side note: I've always wanted to go to a strip club with buckets of pennies and literally make it rain on the girls.

Worked at a grocery store where we didn't have Coinstar, but the store had a change counter that it owned. I know we made a lot of money off of that thing.

Coinstar takes out something like, 9% of whatever you put in.

The grocery store I used to work at only took out 8%, and we'd have people coming in with handfulls, jars, and boxes full of money. I once had a guy come in with 3 of those 5 gallon water jugs from an office full of nothing but pennies. I say it's totally worth it if you have a large amount of loose coins on you.

A lot of places these days WILL NOT TAKE ROLLED COINS AS PAYMENT. And I also know my bank will charge me 10% if I want to use their coin counter if I had a lot of loose change.

I guess I was lucky by working at the grocery store that had a Coinstar-like machinge. I had the key that would turn off the service fee so I never had to pay :D

i actually had a good fight with an old bank about that. i rolled up some change very carefully and they refused to take it. most of it was quarters too.

i even asked for the manager and they refused it too.

i closed my account shortly after.

as far as coinstar, its convenient but it does add up. a few months ago i cashed in about 89 bucks in change. they took about 8 bucks for their fee. ouch. when you're broke as fuck, thats a lot. but thats business, especially when some backs refuse to take your fucking coins.

recently, i did find a bank that actually has a free coin counter. thats kinda cool.

note: if you sign up for their gay emails, coinstar will send up promotions for codes to lower the fee, etc.

Wow, what a bunch of dickheads.

I've never had a problem with my bank. I've given them rolls of coins and also just brought it in bulk and they've never complained or charged me a fee for exchanging it.

Oh, and there are a few really hot tellers working there too. I was really disappointed when I had to sign-up for direct deposit. No more going to the bank and cashing checks anymore. :(

i know! i was really pissed. i kept telling them that it was money and they needed to accept it. that its legal tender. they were assholes.

and yeah, it seems like all banks have hot tellers.

also, im not a fan of direct deposit. the banks REALLY try and push it on u. why? they make more money that way. id rather get my check in my hands and take it when i want to.

Well, you could try that but you'd probably get your ass kicked! :1orglaugh

I use them sometimes for the convenience. My time is worth more than the charge to count the change for me. :2 cents:

I'll count my change up when I'm watching a football game or something. No big deal, no hardship. It's my money and counting it is a trivial effort.

One thing Coinstar does do sometimes that is worthwhile is to charge a fee if you will take your money back in the form of a gift card. I've seen Starbucks, Home Depot, Barnes & Noble. That's worthwhile. Otherwise, is it so hard (or time consuming) that you can't count it? LOL

i saw that. but unfortunately for me, i hate starbucks and i dont go to home depot, and b&n is too expensive. i buy books at goodwill ;)

i generally turn my change into food or beer.

I've used them a couple of times. Doesn't bother me that they take a small percentage, it's easier than having to roll all the coins like the bank wants me to do.

I was considering using the machine at a supermarket once. I've amassed close to $600 dollars in change, and I put it all in rolls. However, I'm unwilling to pay 10% commission for getting change. They don't charge commission if you get gift cards to places like Starbucks or Macy's, places where I have no interest in shopping.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
the one at my grocery store drops coins out fo the bottom of it. My kids have collected about $35 in the last 5 months going in and scooping the coins out from underneath

A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.
I used one back on February 28th, when I needed to trade in a bunch of nickels and dimes for haircut money. I don't think they're a ripoff; I just hate how they break down so much.

How about some places that sell food????

I'm not fond of any of the places that they have gift cards for. Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, Applebee's, those are all overpriced, substandard diners that I have no intention of giving my money to.

Cheesecake Factory kicks ass.

I use coinstar every 6 months or so. 9% is only a lot if you're using your coins as an emergency.
